How many of you are MECP certified. At what level and how did you study for it.

Do you think you can study from sites like these?  What other websites can you gain general knowledge of mobile electronics?

I'm going to Cal Poly, SLO, CA.  Do you think I can find a book at the campus library or the public library to help me study?

Its easy, you can take a sample test at cea.com or org. Im not sure but i heard its expensive if you pay for it on your own. Best buy covered all my costs. I am certified at the bronze level. I think i cant go for my silver level until year from the bronze level test date. Then you have to be asked to be a master installer but dont quote me on that

I did take the sample test and I passed the first two parts but not the one dealing with GPS and car alarms.  What is the best place to place the antenna?  So what exactly does best buy do for you?  Do they buy you books, study guides and pay for the test as part of their expences?

I got my job without having that test and decided that if I ever need it for a job I will go in and write it but other wise wont bother. I looked at a real test and know I can pass it whenever nessasary with about a day of brushing up, but in the end I didnt see the need to get a piece of paper that says I know how to do my job when I already know I can do my job.

I agree with with you. It's a weak cert in my my opinion. It's better than nothing at all if you're new to the game. But there are too many youngsters walking around with this cert and making fools of themselfs when they actually get a job. So it kind of ruins it for others who really are good candidates and just wanted to go the extra mile.

Me, I'm certified at the basic level (the most I am allowed on my own)

It costed me $25 for the book, $35 registration fee....so a total of $60. I studied for a little bit (not counting my previous training in electronics) and passed with an 88%. I didn't study for two weeks up until the test and I wasn't exactly well rested.....in other words, piece of cake. I took the test at the local library.

If you don't already know about electronics, don't nuke the knowledge, it's plain and simple basics. If you are interested in more, read the recomended reading. To remember the power formulas, I made a sketch of all of them and continued doing so in a pattern that worked best for my memory. The ohms law is easy enough to work with, but square rooots and things don't process as fast for me, pure memorization for those.

Most questions you will laugh at the entire test, but it's those one or two that will get you, the real odd ball ones. I'm certain that I lost concentration towards the end of the test, because I remember second guessing a few. So, read up, get some sleep and follow the guide in the book. I think it would be easy to get 100% if you really wanted too. A pass is a pass though, and it still proves nothing in the real world.

I think getting your shop and it's installers ASE (electrical) certified is a much better idea, but MECP never hurts either. It's good to show the customers.
