Can some one tell me how I can reduce 12volts down to about 5 or 6 volts?

Thanx  (Angel)

Without more information (specifically, what are you attempting to do) it's really hard to say the best way to accomplish what you're asking.

For a stable 5vdc, output up to an amp or so, input voltage varies greatly, I'd use a voltage regulator.

It's overkill for a reference voltage. To drive an LED I'd just use a resistor. So, what you're attempting to do will drive how you go about doing it.
