What would happen to a 4 ohm subwoofer if it was plugged into a 120v outlet? would it actually do anything since the electricity coming from the wall is ac current? if it did move would it resonate at 60 hz? (considering the outlet the speaker was plugged into was 120v 60hz.) this question is probably not very useful for anything, i would just like to know what would happen.

It would play a 60hz note, hope the woofer is capable of handling 3600 watts, as that is what it will be getting.

It will turn into a smelly pile of crap. Expect smoke and sometimes flames. It is also highly dangerous to do - playing with AC current is never a safe bet.

Actually its only gonna be about 1100 watts rms. But it will play at 60hz and is not a good idea to do. If you wanna try it plug it into a power bar with an on off switch so you can plug the wires in then turn it on.

Hey Rob@forbidden, what kind of current do you think a subwoofer receives from an ampifier in your vehicle, it is AC current, from a outlet in your house it is just a lot more current, good way to fry a subwoofer, if you got a beast of a sub try 220 current and watch the sucker jump all over....good times Jazzy -------------

OK, point taken on AC current, however do you know how damn dirty the ac current comming outta the wall is. This goes for everyone. I mean we have hooked up big ass subs to the wall for quick break in for rare cases but as a general rule of thumb dont do it unless you wanna kill the driver. It is a lot of fun though. And I can even possibly stress enough how much playing with 220 is a bad Idea. I was removing a stove before that ran off 220 and the cord was fraid. I did not see that and grabbed on to the plug to pull it out. I am like 6'3 and 270 and the jolt took me back a good 4 feet and knocked me down for a good 5 minutes. Sounds funny and I laugh at it now but it is not a funny thing when it happens. I have to agree with rob that its not a good Idea to play with 120 but its alot easier to protect yourself from 120 than 220.

OK, what WILL happen is that you will let the smoke out. Without the smoke the sub won't work anymore. Also if a genie appears make some good wishes.
