is it possible to install a remote start system on a manual transmission car? because you have to apply the clutch in order to start the car, is there any way to over ride that on a 1997 mitsubishi eclipse GS? if so, can somebody tell me how to do that? thank you.

What kind of RS unit are you using ? THere has to be a safety device installed so that it will not start in gear.

my unit is an impulse 990, it works great on my old automatic, but i was just wondering if i could over ride that, as long as i always park in neutral.

you can override the clutch at the clutch switch.. usually, the starter wire goes thru it.. will have a key side and motor side.. just catch the motor side.. On a side note, we will absolutly NOT do this at my shop.. the results can cause thousands of dollars or death. My only recommendation you do if you attempt this is to connect it to the parking brake and it will have to be on for it to start (has to actually stop the car!) If not, the car WILL start and WILL roll forward.. I don't know if 12volt remembers this, but I did this in my old Mazda truck in the shop and accidently hit the remote while working on it (I was laying on it) and it started and drug me a little until I ran into a bench.. Shop manager wasn't to happy and I was a little embarrased.. My brake was on, but it wouldn't hold the starter. There is not a neutral safety switch that I know of on a standand transmission.. ------------- George

I have seen those and yes they seem to be pretty safe.. they will keep your car running when you exit to make sure no one is in the car adn the car is running.. so it would have to be out gear..

Here is a good unit for manuals. https://www.12voltshop.com/proddetail.asp?prodid=CS423&cat=12&path=1,12 If you know how to test polarity in a wire you should be able to test the switch on the clutch pedal to determine what you will need to do to bypass it. Some clutch switches simply require a constant ground to bypass the switch. You could do this by using a ground output when running. This is not the only type of switch though, so you will need to test it to see how it reacts. Find the polarity of both wires at the switch, then see which one changes when the clutch is depressed. whatever that one changes to is what you will need to apply to it. If it reads 12v+ at rest, and goes to 0 volts when the clutch is depressed then you can use the ground output from the RS bypass it. You may need a relay. ------------- J Rilla

I have bypassed the clutch on a honda del sol. The only hard part was getting to the wires above the clutch pedal. I used the second ignition remote start relay for this and wired the parking brake with neutral safety

You can use the hood safty switch from the alarm and hook it up to the wire of the light that says your parking brake is on. That way the car will not start unless the brake it on. You have to use a relay to reverse it. On my Neon, I just disconnected the plug on the clutch switch, and stuck a fuse in it for continuity.

most RS have a wire that has to see ground in order for the remote start to work and it just so happens that most vehicles have a wire that comes directly of the parking brake that has a ground when the brake is engaged.... same wire you'd use with an in-dash video system

i did an install into my 94 escort, it did have a neutral safety wire in the manual trans. you wll need a the vehicles wiring schematic to find out if yours has one. chiltons or haynes usually have schematics. then youll need a meter to test it etc... i believe some cars have this wire for the computer diagnostics. i figured this out when i was running diag codes once and it said the clutch switch or trans switch was open, or something to that effect! if you dont have this wire i would highly recommend not doing this install, too much liability.
