I've posted this question on the ranger and explorer forums with no luck, so I'll see if anyone here has any ideas.

I'm taking the overhead console (with digital temperature reading and compass) from a Ford Explorer and putting it into a Ford Ranger (Mazda B3000 to be exact, but they're the same thing). This has been done successfully hundreds of times. I used the following diagram to wire everything up:

I tested all of the connections with a multimeter and ensured that all of the wires were getting power when they were supposed to based on the above diagram. However, I now have several problems.

1) The temperature reading and compass display is supposed to come on with the key in the "on" position. (I wired into the radio's key-on wire for this). It does come on when the key is on, but if the door is opened and the dome light comes on, the display goes off.

2) If I manually switch the dome light on, the temp and comp display goes off.

3) If I turn on the overhead console's built in map light, the temp and comp display turns off.

4) If I turn on the overhead console's built in map light, it is very dim. At the time time, my factory dome light comes on, but only very dimly.

5) When I use the dimmer switch (which I tapped into), the overhead console's display dims when it should be getting brighter. The dash and radio lights get brighter when the console's display gets darker, and vice versa.

6) The temperature reads about 20 degrees too cold always.

Does the above give any clues as to which circuit is wired incorrectly? As I stated, I did test that each wire is connected and gets the proper amount of power according to the above diagram. I later found out that other people who have done this swap all used the overhead console from a 97-01 explorer, whereas mine came from a 2003 explorer sport trac. So if the wiring changed (visually and functionally they are identical) that would explain my problems, but I would like to know how to go about determining how to wire everything up instead of purchasing the 97-01 part.

Thanks in advance!

What I meant by that was I already tried those forums (RPS, Ranger Station, Explorer4x4.com) with no luck. So I'm hoping to get some more technical ideas here. The consensus over there was "just buy one from a 97-01 model" but I would like to figure out how to rewire the one I have.

Thanks for the reply!
