how do I change 12 volts to 5 volts.

How much current? How big do you want the interface box to be? Up to about 500ma, you can use a 7905 voltage regulator without a heatsink. Up to one amp, you can use the same device, but a heatsink becomes mandatory. The 7905, available at Radio Shack is catalog number 276-1770, and is less than 2 bux... This is the best way to do it, but if you need more than one amp, you will have to hunt for the 5 amp version... National Semiconductor makes the LM1084 in various flavors...
