Does anyone know the law regarding remote starter. A friend of mine at work today told me that on the weekend he remote started his car in the driveway. A couple minutes later someone knocks at the door, he goes to open it and its a police officer. The officer tells my friend that its illegal to leave the car running unattended. My friend explains to the officer that the keys are not in the car and the doors are also locked and if someone does get in the car the engine automatically will shut down if you press the brake with no keys. The officer says he doesn't care because remote starts are illegal in Canada! LOL}:) So my friend asked if the officer can let Future shop and the other businesses know because they are selling them. I know in Ontario its against the law to leave a car running unattended with keys in it but never heard of remote start being illegal.

It's not the remote start that is illegal but in some places it is illegal to leave the vehicle unattended. What can ya do?

Ask the officer the stautes numbers so you can look them up yourself, to see how they read. the owrd "unattended can be vage so you need to see what the statuts reads, if i am in my house and i can see the car out the window, i say it is NOT unattened, but that is me,but who noes what they think it means. i heard about leaving a car unattended, but no one can prove it to me, just beacuse "someone says" so they may be miss informed, including the officer.
I am suprized that they (remsot start) compiaes dont have waring labels on the manurals or box or something, say that cheak with local laws. just to protect them selfs.

im in north dakota and around here its illeagal to leave ur car running unattended only if the keys are in the ignition

I know that O Canada does have laws on "run times" This according to an update on my Astrochart. It reads. "Some municipalities have initiated by-laws, whereas idling times may vary, from one municipalitie to the next" Sounds like law makers have too much time on their hands in O Canada too! -------------

ya, but the shortest run time I have heard is 20 minutes, anything under that is fine. Trust me, if they were illegal than FS wouldnt carry them. We dont even carry satalitte radio yet because it falls in that "grey" area. I wouldnt be too concerened about it and if you get the same kinda hasstle again then I would definatly get the status numbers so you can review the law. If he doesnt know them or is unable to find them then fighting a ticket of any kind would be simple.

The only by-law in this city that I am aware of is the unnecessary idling of trucks and buses. I think it would definately be something to fight if given a ticket. Also why is it ok for the car makers to have them on some of these new cars now. I did a quick search of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and I did not find any law against it.

Laws vary from place to place. You will need to check laws in your area. I can tell you in New Jersey it is illegal to leave your vehicle running, whether you are in it or not. Stopped at a traffic light or something like that is OK. Sitting in a parking lot with your engine running for 15 minutes waiting for someone to come out of the store will get you a summons. Air pollution is the driving factor behind this law. Some remote starts will shut off after 10 minutes but I think remote start companies will have make units with selectable shut off times. I think its 2 minutes in NJ. Not just for buses or trucks. This pertains to cars also. Check the laws in your state/province. Laws are usually available online somewhere. John

As of March 1, in Burlington Ont, idling for more than 3 minutes with earn you a $110 fine. The police say they don't have time to enforce unless specifically called in, and would be a low piority ( after donuts). Bylaw enforcers will ticket if the can find offenders, but only if complaint is made. Why was time with this kind of law and enforcement.

Hmmmm, 3 minutes huh, well while I dont live in Burlington and I do believe air polution is a big deal, if my car is idling outside my house while its minus 30 out and they wanna give me a ticket the law can pretty much go and kiss my ass.

they will have to give tickets out to new Cadillac owners, i.e. CTS, since they come with factory remote start and don't use a key for the ignition..... ------------- car audio pays my bills...

And even the new Malibu has remote start I believe....and no key? What do they use?
