a few years ago i read an article in car audio and electronics that was about useful tools that you could make yourself. there was stuff like muting pluges and test lights, but one was called a "noise sniffer". it was supposed to help determine if system noise was being introduced through a grounded out wire by pin-pointing the spot that was bad. or somthing. i lost the magizine and have been looking for a similiar article ever since. does any one know what is or how to make a noise sniffer?

what you're supposed to do i sget an old cassette walkman, or some kind of tape player, pull out the head that reads the cassettes, and thats about it. i went an picked up an old panasonic taperecorder for a dollar and gutted the motor out of it, extended the wires on the head (there were only five) so they would be long enough to reach around the inside of a car, modified the play button so it was just a simple switch.
now, i think that when i took the motor and gears out i may have ungrounded somthing that i needed, becasue when i first got it i could hear static through the speaker when i hit play, and now when i hit the switch there is nothing, but im still working on it. maybe i'l try again and leave everything in tact with a different player.
ideally, when it is all up and running, you hit play, it activates the tape head which picks up electromagnetic signals, much like those that cause radiated noises in stereos, and other types of interferences as well. the device "sniffs" out the source of the noise by playing it through the speaker. natrually, the louder the noise on the speaker, the closer you are to the source.
i figure it will help determine if the ign system is causing noise, or the charging system, or an acc. in the vehicle, or where a certian wire is shorted out at, with little to no thinking.

Wow I would have never thought of that, hell I was think it was some elobrate thing you had to build from radio shark parts
Im going to give it a shot with my old walkman
Thanks
