I have a 1992 buick century and besides some of my other problems there is one in particular that has me bumfuzzeld. Some times while I'm driving it starts missing and when I come to a stop it dies, but thats not the weird part. If I put it in neutral or park it starts and purrs like a kitten but as soon as I put it in gear it sputters and dies. Also when its night and I use the lights they fliker constantly dash lights, head lights and all. The battery always has plenty of charge.any ideas? thanks,,,,,NOSBO

Why would the plugs work perfect in neutral and not in drive or reverse?

because in neutral and park, your not puttng a load on the motor. It is just free spinning. Where if you put it into gear, you are puting a load on the engine because you are spinning the tourqe converter. There is a RPM stall but there will still be more load on the motor while in gear. Is the flickering all the time... idle in park and when in drive ?.... if it is then i would atleast check them.... had the same problem.... turns out i had some serious  plug problems.... saw it as soon as i pulled out the first one.

Yep,

All the lights fliker continuosly whether sitting still and idleing or going 70 down the highway. I'll try to check the plugs, I just thought someone might have had the same problem and it seems like it should be something more centralized like a short in the ingnition or a hot wire some where. The Guy I bought it from said it just had a lower end rebuild, main bearings, pistons, etc.but it was broken into and someone stole his hi dollar amfm radio.I put a cheap one back in and there were a few extra wires , 2 of them were tapped in off the orange and yellow hot wires under the steering collumn. I used the original wires for the stock radio hookup and capped off and taped the wire coming from the #6 hot wires under the steering collumn. Also he said the electric windows worked fine before that and also I can't find the switch for the drivers door that turns on the interior light. All the other doors turn that light on when they are opened. It's just and enigma rapped in a mystery!

Check the ground cable from the battery to the vehicle chassis. If it is loose or corroded it will create all types of problems.

yup, that earth sounds like it is playing up, is the radio losing it's settings? if it is then definetly look at that eart wire, it's most likely not making a good connection on the body or the battery, you put it under load and it wont be able to draw enough current through the corrosion or the loose joint and will cause the engine to falter and whilst your driving the vibrations through the road are causing it jump around on its contact and and its losing contact causing things to fault. If this is due to corrosion, then remove the terminal, clear all corrosion and then put a layer of Vaseline on the battery post before putting the terminal back on, sounds crazy but it works.
