I'm trying to replace the factory standard stereo with a nice sony mp3/cd unit. The wiring all checks out voltage wise (both bare wires coming from the dash and with the new wiring harness connected up).

However, when I put this (50W X 4) sony stereo in the display starts flashing every few seconds i.e. it isn't getting a nice constant supply of power. The clock on the dash also starts to dim in and out in sympathy.

So I'm guessing that I need to grab 12V power sources straight from the fuse box? Is that right? How do I do this?

When you play the CD player, is the car running or is it just in the ON position ?

A couple of things that could be wrong is that your drawing more amperage than the charging system is capacble of outputting. This means a weak alternator, weak battery ( maybe both ). Try to go straight to the battery but there may be no change in the condition. If it ddoesn't get any better after the wire move, look at the charging system and get it checked at the mechanics.

Hmmm, yeah I might just get it professionally installed as I need some new speakers anyway.

I might have another crack at it this weekend. Thinking about it the wires coming from the dash do look rather on the thin side compared to the wires from the sony wiring harness.
