How much do you guys give away as far as free labor on custom projects in order to build a reputation? I've personally have worked on a 40k parts and labor custom job. Yet I've also worked on a 5k job which was free labor but involved almost just as much labor as the 40k job. The reason for the free labor was to showcase the work me and my friends can do. In the long run I think it was a good call. Now I'm working for a manufactuer and it was all due to me building up my name. What do you guys do?

I agree - If I was trying to make a name labor would be free.  And I definetley do some crazy FG stuff (like the Human Raign amp cover type of stuff)...Nothing beats word of mouth...

I see a lot of FG projects and they look similar.  I think there are 2 paths INTERGRATION (which is what most people do) and OUTRAGEOUS (which is what will build your rep.).  I would definetley do outrageous.

I've never tried to make a name for myself as I don't really see this as a career, more of a hobby that I can make money with. I do work side jobs for several shops, most of which don't deal primarily in car audio. I will do stuff for free, or more likely at reduced rates, if its an idea I really like, and I'm excited about it. Has little to do with really making a name, I just wanna say I did it.
