i have a Head Unit with 3 pairs of rca outs ( front rear and sub) and i was wondering if i took the rear out, hooked it up to a dolby digital decoder (model  sdu4) would it give me surround sound in my car from those two channels.

Yes and no. The source unit will play through the rear RCA but when there is channel separation tracks where ther is no rear and only fronts, then you will get nothing going to the decoder. Otherwise you would get surround sound from the rear RCA's when there is a signal coming from it. Rockford Fosgate has a really good piece that decodes normal 2 channel mono recordings and decodes it into stereo imaging.
