the other day i went to many c-a retailers.to see whats out there. and two of them were best-buy and circuit-city. best buy was trying to sell me a band pass box. on how hard it hit with a cheap pioneer in-it. and circuit city said "this mtx 3401 will put out 800 watts" i said okay but thats a peak 2 ohm rating right?  he paused and said yes i believe so.. any how my question is ,....not to burn any one but why do they over rate the stuff they sell? if they dont get paid commission?

Maybe they get cash incentives to the department to reach sales quotas?

If there not selling they are not doing there job. even if they lie or bend the truth a little. if there are not doing that job they get fired. one thing to remember is that most people who go to those stores "bb" or "cc" trust every word they say. and it's on the box too.

Well I work for best buy andno we get no sort of bonus whatsoever. As far as salestaff goes it really all depends on how well they've been trained, if at all. My sales guys don't do this kind of stuff they will tell you rms values and what not only because if i find out otherwise I make them regret it.  Then you are dealing with a retail store so properly trained sales staff isn't always gauranteed.

I to work at best. One thing is we don't get fired if we don't sell. Best buy offers job security. If there is no business you still work unlike most shops that slow down and get rid of people to save money. Not every best buy does that. I have no problem telling people that the equptment they bought sucks. Even if it was bought at best buy. We sell dual and everyone i get to install i double check to see if they bought the service plan. I'm the senior at my store so i work partially on the floor. Most of the time when you get a sales person that says something that you know is a little off it's more than likely that he is new and trying his hardest. He didn't lie when he said it was 800 watts did he. Just don't base you experience to every best buy in the country as most people do on this site. If you look or come to my store in orland park IL you will see that some best buys have a great sales and install team. Sure we are non commision but i like it that way. I work at my own pace not being rushed by anyone. If i don't sell anything one day no big deal.

no i was not saying he lied. but 800 watts is the peak wattage of that amp. and when will that amp put the peak watts out? maybe maybe once in the amps life for a split second. what im trying to say is it would be wonderfull for sales to say this puts out 200 watts at 4 ohms RMS. and not try to sell an item based on a peak rating. i know enough about this addiction to know better. some don't thats my point. is if you bought something and was told hey its 1200 watts. and then you learn it was only 600 watts. would'nt you. be upset?

and thanks to all that repliedposted_image

You went to a box store and got bad advice/info, plain and simple. Personally I no longer work in the retail portion of the business but I still play around with salesmen on the occasion I have to go get a part in a retailer. I can't even begin to remember how much bull and flat out lies I was told by them, and these were retail outlets where salesmen are commissioned and generally know what they are talking about.
