My dad's 1999 S10 has a problem. When you turn the key ON (not to start) the guages all jump to attention. But when you start the truck, they all go dead! The plug into the back of the guage pack appears to go in tightly.

Any suggestions?

Take it to an auto mechanic and ask him.  My bet is the ignition switch.
