when i used to install my friend had this Big Bluepoint iron that would heat up in 1.5seconds, I used to solder 4 awg w/ it nicely but I don't remember what the name of this solder iron was and I can't find it, does cornwell make one as nice?

I think the one you're talking about is from Snap-on.

The cornwell equivalant sucks imo. I have both irons the blue point is the only way to go.

Most Blue Point soldering irons are rebranded Wellers. Which one you looking for?

My guess is the butane one. I have two of them and they work great until the tips wear out.

Blue Point Model #YAS32 Cheaper to buy online as well, I however wouldn't bother getting the kit (I never use the extra tips).

Replacement tips are 12 bucks each.

Also remember to use only good filtered butane. I recommend and only use Ronson.

Agreed, I have gone through 2 butane irons so far in the last year and about 4 tips. The only problem with these are the flint in the ignitoer end up going and you can't light the iron anymore.

actually, the one i'm looking for is a wired one, i have a butane powerprobe which is decent for portability but i want the big one for everything heavy duty, the one im looking for looks like this:

https://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=55522&group_ID=785&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

except it had dual heat, not just a single point coming out, so the body looks like that, it was heavy

this is the dual heat tip it had

https://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=15633&group_ID=785&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

but the body seemed larger on the one i used to use, plus it had a nice built in spotlight that was real handy when soldering in tight places

I like the Snap-On solder irons, but my Weller that I bought from Sears works pretty good too.

My company sells the cordless weller one. Back in the day they didn't have the self igniting one so I spent 100bucks on the snap-on. And now I just saw the weller with the self ignition for something like 30 bucks. bastereds.

but imo "Pencils" are the way to go. They are more small and easy to work with. I can't imagine installing an alarm without one.

At my old shop we had a big craftsman pistol style iron that would glow red. Just incase we had to solder 4 guage or anything like that. which I can't recall ever doing. I think all we used it for was to light cigarettes.
