i have been working for best buy for almost 9 years and i have noticed as of late that it is just one of the worst places to work. i have been an installer, senior, and sup/lead. right now i am just an installer because i stepped down during the last "big shift" i am also in a struggle to get a raise from my last review; they won't give one to me because i makw eot much. so what do you make an hour???

Wow 9 years for big blue huh?  Damn, as for the pay depends a lot on the area you work.  I know the guys in NY make an average of 18/hr. While in my area they start at 11/hr.

I second that emotion.  Though thanks to the overall image of bb installers, it's kinda hard to get other shops to even talk to me.

i have looked at my pay rate with my gm and it says that the cap for my pay scale is $20.09. I am not to far off from that but they will still not give me a raise for my yearly review which i scored a 3.7 on. i am the most productive and knowledgeable in my store. in fact i have more experience than every other installer combined. i just don't think it's right especially when they pound the "employee retention" into your head. if they want to be the "employer of choice" then they need to pay appropriately; plain and simple.

CIrcuit guys makes alot more than BB....more hourly, bonus, and they get tips (from the guys I talked to)....we get gar-bage pay,no tips or bonus.....the money is working for dealerships and/or doing commission work from other *ma&pa shops

let me say this, i am pretty sure there is no master installers making 30 an  hour. I don't even think ron gold makes that much. As of right now there is no pay increase for master installer level but that is going to change soon and from what i hear it is going to be big.

Posted By: kwalton
Date Posted: June 04, 2006 at 3:23 PM
so what are you hearing??? i would be interested if there was going to be changes coming down the pike.

as for ron gold; i can't imagine he makes to much because he works in the south florida region. i recently moved to south florida from the baltimore/dc area and from what i have seen so far this area is run by a bunch of incompetent people. there is one bay that i know of that have not installed alarm, remote starts, or overheads for over a year now because noone there knew how to do them. the bay i am cuyrrently in is definitely the most experienced in the area and we will take on anything that comes our way.

Yeah but ron does know his doodie. I sometimes have to read his tips twice to understand them. But they are coming out with a pay increase for master installers. And from what my services manager tells me is that they are also going to be doing the mobile to go where installers will have a van and go to dealerships and do work.

Ron Gold lol!  I think that guy's hilarious.  And he does seem to know what he's talking about.  I think highest post count goes to him on the tech tips board, with one of the installers in my shop coming in a close second.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but Best Buy and car dealers will never work!  I've worked directly with dealers for the past 5 years and the two types of businesses are totally different.  One of the biggest things is how will you get paid?  Dealers like to issue PO's and pay a lump sum at the end of the month, they aren't going to pay for each job that is done.  Another thing, dealers don't sell anything unless they can make money.  How are you going to convince a customer to buy something from a dealer at a certain price, when they can get it at Best Buy (the same guys that would be doing the installs) for a different price!  There are so many other problems with that idea, but I don't have the time or energy to write them all down, b/c like I said...it will never work.

Posted By: doibuy
Date Posted: June 05, 2006 at 10:03 PM
I know you bleed BLUE, but trust me this will never work.  There are too many smaller companies that specalize in this type of work for you to compete.  Dealers need stuff done yesterday, not today or tomorrow.  That means having the parts and product to do the job immediately not, we'll order it, corporate will have to approve it, then it will be in next week.  It's all about relationships, that means you'll have to have a rep or saleman to take care of the account, someone they can call when they need something, at any time of the day or night.

Posted By: Fastlearner
Date Posted: June 05, 2006 at 11:47 PM
It will easily work. You would be surpirsed on how many best buys already deal with dealerships for things like Overheads, adding power locks, remote starts, used cars they get with stolen radios. Everything best buy could do. Especially around my area where one street in a two mile strecth has about 15 dealerships. This is a big oppurtinity for best buy and they will easily capitalize on it. Post your arguements and i'll disprove them.

Posted By: doibuy
Date Posted: June 06, 2006 at 7:24 AM
Ok, maybe I should rephrase my statement "it will never work"  to "it won't be successful".  There will always be one or two dealerships which may send a car here or there (probably in your smaller markets), but for a big corporation like BB with stock holders they have to keep happy it won't be successful.  Besides as soon as they get their numbers and it doesn't show the type of profit they want, or a new idea comes around they'll ditch it and move on to something else.  I've worked for big Best Buy/Circuit City types and there have been so many big ideas like this that went away just as fast as they came about.  Just don't get your hopes up!

my last day on the job at best buy. i stood up in a meeting and told the gm he was an a hole. ended up getting choked by the #2 guy and rolling around on the floor. cops where cool when they got there they said that if they arrest me they arrest everybody. i guess i wasn't bestbuy management materiel. i'd go to work for popeyes fried chicken before i went back to best buy. also---- i'm looking for installers in the atlanta area if any of you smurfs want a job let me know.

I agree with this statement about best buy doing work for dealers. When i was working at best buy we did a few jobs for dealers and due to the same day drop policy and the customer apointments seeing that we were already booked out a few days. The dealers were made to leave the car with use for at least 2 days. especaily for some thing like a over head video or keyless/ remote start. the dealer put up with this for a few jobs but they now do work strictly with the new shop i am working at.

The shop i install at now does 2-3 dealer cars a day along with other customer cars. this is with 2 installers compared to the  5+ installers at best buy. All the dealers have to do is call us the day before and we will pick up the  car the next morning and get it done and back to them that day if we cant do it right when they call us. basicly dealer cars will not work in the best buy install bays.

AS far as pay i left best buy to go to work for a smaller shop and have nearly tripled my pay. when i turned in my two weeks the store GM's and my senior offered to give me a raise if i would stay but they could not even come close to that amount im making at my new job. I think this is kinda sad for such a large company having its installers out payed by a small business. this includes benifits, hourly rate, better hours etc.

best buy doesn't understand installers. they are just guys with names on thier shirts. and getting sweated to put bass blockers on every speaker in a customer's car??? what the heck is that? plus the constant head games like having to do the best buy cheer every morning. i know there are a lot of realy good guys working there but in my opinion the pay realy sucks and the working environment is lousy too.

well not meaning to jump back onto subject, but im a newb and seriously thinking of car audio/installation as a new career. im trying to see where i can expect to be and what i can make doing and learning as much as i can in 5 or so years. and what is the pay like at a high end shop?

Posted By: gregory863

domino best buy is very good at teaching young installers. they also have a lot of rules and regulations. for a lot of young guys this is good, it teaches disipline.  if you want to get into install it's a good start. you won't be doing a lot of high end but it is good experience. collage and a differant career might be better for you if you can hack it. my son is in college and i tell him don't be like me. if you like to work with your hands or are doing burger king or some job like that best buy is a huge step up. also most managers like murphy says are good guys but some get off on telling people what to do and love firing people. but i guess that's everywhere. if you go to best buy be on your toes for the first few months. do what you're told without ever arguing. never give a manager a hard time about anything. do your best. be on time. shut up and listen. you'll do fine.

I left the company making 12.50hr. The problem with best buy is politics.. I can make more money on my own or with a bigger shop. I hated the management at the store. Like mentioned before, i was just a shirt with a name on it. No manager knew what i was doing. if there was no one on the sales floor, i was forced to shut down the bay or leave the other isntalled by himself even if we were swamped(2R/S deck and 4 u know the drill) But if i had to call in sick, i got doodie cause no one could cover the install bay for me. I worked off the clock way too many hours for that company and almost punched out the sales manager after finishing up a corvette and the guys amp wasnt powerful enough for the sub. After being verbally abused by both the customer and the salesmanager in FRONT of the customer, i took off my shirt, told them im off the clock and have been so, im going home.. locked up my box and walked out..   unfortunately i will never work for a company like best buy again because of all their politics and their bs. Its a shame, but installs should not be a part of retail

Ron gold And danny glover? Man, this is my morning view of the tech tips all over again.
Maybe someone will post something like "combos neato chewy wow" again.
if anyone remembers that post.. feel free to bring it back to life...
that one kept me laughing for a good 6 months.
and on the pay subject. i made a little more at circuit city, but i do hate that place with a vengence.
people leave my shop all the time talking about how good they are, then i drive by the shop and see their car out there for 3 days straight=P... do that math..... and i'm always cheaper..
if i could hire people who didn't get on here and complain.. and i'm not going to call them out coughspookiecough.. then maybe we could get some work done, get some bonus hours in the bay and start making money again!
anyways.
no ones EVER going to be completely happy. be it pay or the company. and the mom and pop stores here in virginia open and close here so fast most of those guys end up back at your circuits and best buys.
All in all. everything is what you make of it
if you wakeup every morning saying how doodiety your job is.. guess what... your day's going to be doodiety

I blame managers, leads, sups, what ever you call them. If you treat your guys like crap then it makes everyone bitter. I never worked at BB but I've worked at 2 CC's first shop was a great place to work. We were always in the top 5 in the company. Everyone got along and we hit our numbers. The other CC, was never top anything until I worked there and started taking everyone out for drinks after work.

But the bottom line is that those old guys they called "Regional Managers" suck! Suits don't belong in the 12v industry! They are the scum of the earth. No matter how many times you hit your numbers or how much money you put in your pockets they are never happy. What I would give to get my hands on a CC Regional manager now that I don't work for them anymore.
(sorry, turned into a little steam vent there at the end)

That was one thing I never understood, why a company that you work for would ever charge anything over cost for staff....

When I worked for FS it was cost +10%, and we were forbidden to talk to reps about deals (yeah right, when you're in the industry 10 years the reps are your friends).

the place I work for now is cost +5 within your 3 month probation then straight cost after that.

And I don't care who you are, I still think BBY.FS installers get the shaft when it comes to pay.

Installers are always the guys that get it in the yin yang no matter where you work. I've worked at high end custom shops where we weren't allowed to talk to our clients even when they are watching us work on their car. Or not be able to take pics of cars.

Then I worked at CC where they took away our bonus(boned us) and then gave it back to us. All they would tell us was "It's good for the company". I could give an "F" about the company if the company doesn't give an "F" about me.

Do they have an 12v Installer Association?

THIS IS IT, I'VE HAD IT.

don't get me wrong i do love what i do for a living but i think that the best buy organization in the south florida area is going to break me. i moved here almost 9 months ago from the baltimore/dc area with my girl and i thought "great i will transfer with best buy and have a job when i get there." south florida best buy's must be run by a different company because they just don't do things the way best buy says they should be done. install bays closing for a few hours during the day and the installers going home because there is nothing to do, a complete and utter lack of training, and no, and i mean no, recognition whatsoever.

isn't best buy supposed to be the retailer of choice??? and the employer of choice??? i just can't see myself working here much longer especially when they won't give me a raise for my yearly review. i am one of the most knowledgeable people in mobile and they won't pay me for my expertise. they would rather pay people that can't even do a deck in a 2001 maxiam or a 1991 accord (yes i have come accross instances where this has happened.)

sorry for my rant. i just had a really bad day and i dan near decked my gm for getting in my face in front of a customer.

Bottom line.. don't let these guys walk all over you then come rant on the net man. Call what ever corporate 1800 number you can. You gotta make a stand against suits. If not for yourself then for your fellow installers.

Do you know me, you should? I am Best Buy.. Who enjoys that BS in the morning? LMFAO..... And don't forget the "numbers". Standing there for 20 minutes while a manager gives the store an eye brow beating every morning because you dropped 2 spots or made revenue but didn't attach the accessories, best buy card, etc... and meanwhile mentions nothing about the install bay... Those days are the best.
If minimum wage gets raised to $7.50 some of you might get a $.25 raise... Best Buy pay is doodiety that is for sure. White Castle will hire in at $10/ hour to bake a burger. No immediate talent needed for that. I think most people were born with that basic instinct. Heres another messed up thing about Best Buy, the lunch compliance rule. That is another way to save on labor budget. Where I live we have no laws on lunches by an employeer, yet they tell the employees it is law you have to do it... WTF is up with that? All politics and greed. You would think I company that has $42 billion (that is what the training sessions use to say when they would tell about how Best Buy pays cash for a new store and never finances it through a bank) sitting around in the bank could pay the employees a little better....

How about working on getting some speaker wiring adapters in the stores. The ones there now are mostly outdated and none of them fit the newer cars. And how about some more integration modules for stereo installs, & RS installs. Maybe I need to be on this committee. I am full of ideas for improvement.... posted_image

Hey, do yall get paid per hour (ex $15) even if yall guys dont even do an install that day?
Currently, i do alarm install as a side job and i just charge for the install regardless of how long it takes.

Yes, hence the post to get them in the store. Takes too long to get them in when you want to do a car that day or the next. And since they had the ETK about scosche and Metra ordering and it costing the company money I think it is justified.

I use to work for Circuit City and I make crap. I only make 11 an hour and I worked there for 4 years. The I moved to Best Buy and in less then 3 years I was maken 21 an hour. Now I work for the Government just installing TV`s, PC`s and Satilight TV. I make about 75K a year now and this work is SO SO much easyer then what C. City & B. Buy makes you do. I also get a raise every year no matter what too.

Yes you do just check your hand book I know it is in there. They did the same thing to me and a bunch of the guys I worked with. When you do fined it show your GM and they have to pay you back. If you still get the run around call your HR person. When I worked the I was about to become a GM so I know it is in there. If you cant fined it in your hand book just call HR.

If you read the yearly compesation manuals it clearly states that installers do not get a 90 day review.   The compensation manual is something that every Best Buy employee should be familiar with as it lists the pay scales and schedules for every job code in the store. It also lists the guidlines for your raise based on the salary band and review score you receive.   If you are having a wage dispute and you use this as your arguing point you have all the leverage you need. Believe me, it made a ALOT of money in back pay. My GM even said "Where did you find this??" lol.

Pull up tagzone and search for "compensation" it will be a liken that sais FY07 compensation manual or something to that effect, and it is updates with new wages yearly.

When faced with a problem in our bay, we just ask the question: "what would Ron Gold do?" I love gettin on there for the useless half hour I half to show up before the bay opens and read the latest tech tips and feedbacks.

Oh, that tech briefing stuff is good. Even though we're more likely to get an 87 than an 07at our store, it's good to know stuff like we can do just about anything in a Honda Fit except for the H.U. Props to whoever made that happen.

Thanks for the compensation manual! Never saw that myself

half the people in our store aren't even at the lower part of the pay scale.

i found out how low i really am and it's helping me to a 2$ review.

peace dudes

OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH,  Compensation manual.

For some reason I can see some managers getting ticked off and canning some folks if they pull that thing out.

Employee:  "  Hey look at this,  you aint paying me what I am supposed to get "

Manager: "  Fine, your fired,  I'll hire some other just graduated high school kid who will do this for $7.50 an hour. "

My manager told me flat out that I am within $2 of the vey maximum he will ever pay an installer to work for him,  and I am on the low end of the Advanced Installer pay scale ( lowest is $11.24 an hour for an advanced installer, max $17.50 ).  I go for the master installer test in the morning,  for some reason I doubt it will be that last time I go to take that test posted_image

Am I missing something?  I found the compensation manual, but under my job code it didn't list anything as far as the pay scale goes.  Oh well who cares I guess tomorrow's my last day anyway.

Good luck with the master installer test... I might try in a year or two but I only have 2 out of the 3 years of experience needed (But i like to think ive come a long way in a short time). I think i heard from someone else on this board that they might be creating a new job code for master installers soon, which only makes sense... And if thats the way your GM feels about installers u should leave. A few well placed damage claims from some knuckleheads will probably change his whole outlook.

And congrats on the $2 review bazz...

oh, i haven't gotten it yet. but that's what i want.
or i'll tell them to transfer me to the store 9 miles from my house, not 26
since the new service manager/district posterchild is there at the closer store and knows me i might have a chance of doing that
either pay me the money for gas i need or let me drive to a store 15 mins away, not 30 on the interstate.
besides.
i'm listed as pay 9 there.
i should not have people on 5-7 getting more than me.
simple as that.. unless those people are lifelong bestbuyers who haven't gotten a promotion. then i can see them maxing out their pay.
max pay is like he said, 17-19 ish. bottom is in the 11's
not at the bottom. but close enough to bitch about it

I was told I got a 90 day raise,  then when time came around for it,  I was told I didn't get one.  I was a little upset, but I let it go ( was only gona be like $0.25 anyway was what I was told ).  I decided I would get raises by working for it.

Got MECP Basic,  got a little more than manager promised,  more than made up for the 90 day thing.

Got MECP Advanced 4 months later.  Got another raise.  Still at the low end of the Advanced pay scale according to the compensation manual,  still not making what I feel I am worth ( about $1 more than I am now I figure is fair ),  but no worries.  Here is why:

I work for a company making a couple dollars an hour higher within 10 months of being hired than I was at previous employeer for 6 years and managing the store.  I got 2 raises without asking,  just took a couple tests.  I have health insurance that is equal to what I had before,  but before it cost me $18.90 every week,  now its $19.99 every other week.  I made it to a position equal to install senior/sup ( our store doesn't have that title position ) within the store at the first of June.  Since then I have took it upon myself to learn more of SOP rules ( as no one in the install bay previously really knew them or bothered to look ) and am training the others.  I talk to everyone in teh department and get their viewpoint on things and not even on our stores viewpoint commitee ( although they recruited me for this very reason, as a manager requested them do, and I attend first meeting tomorrow morning ).  I have made very good impression on the entire management staff since the "promotion" and was told earlier this week that when my review arrives that my performance will be figured in as an amount to be added to what I get from the review itself.  And I didn't have to ask for any more, it was brought up to me.

If you do your job, and do it well,  and your management team notices it,  you will be rewarded greatly within this company.  Of course,  your management team does play more into that than just the work does.

Murph,  I owe you a big thanks for the help you gave me throught PM's.  I am sure I will be asking for more help in the future.

Yea knowing SOP really does help, its helped me atleast. Too bad it doesnt tell you how to deal with stupid managementposted_image. They really need to add that section.

Being an empowered installer doesn't help if management still doesn't listen,  or gets annoyed that you suddenly know more than they themselves and start making your life miserable.

YOu should as someone how little brother futureshop's install bays are doing just after they adopted a BBY clone store operation. I'd say 50% of the talented installers quit because we got kicked so far down the totem pole we had to answer to customer service sup's.

How's that for empowerment
