Hi everyone,

I just recently installed a cd headunit in a friends car, and ever since his dash lights and parkers have ceased to work!    To install it (90's magna) i just took out the old stereo and used the 12v, acc 12v, earth and speaker wires that used to connect to the original stereo to power the new one.

if anyone could explain to me how to get the parkers working again then i would be extremely grateful!! (before my friend really cracks it!)

I had some idea that maybe the old wires that went to the original stereo have a provision in them to dim the stereo lights when the headlights were turned on, but i don't know how this whole dashlight/stereo dimming thing works..... so if anyone has the time to explain how the dimming system on the old stereo worked that would be a great help for the future!

Cheers,   Mark

make sure you have plugged in all plugs especially if you have a dimmer in the car.

mecp certification is not always needed. I have it and it has not helped me out at all. my experience out shines it.

the dimmer on the radio is built in to the radio and when the wire sees 12 volts or what ever it dimms the radio simple as that on  after market radios you dont generally use dimmer wires some radios you do though who knows. but that is how it works.

Did you verify that your ground was actually ground and not a dimmer or illumination lead?  To check this just first unplug the radio, then check the fuses and replace any blown ones, then turn on the headlights, and then check and see if all of your power wires still test correctly.  If they do not then one of the wires is an illumitation or dimmer wire.

I did disconnect the ground i was using and i tried just earthing the stereo straight to the chassis, but the problem was still there :-(     Also i checked the fuses (although there didn't seem to be a fuse that said parkers - so i checked the stop fuse and a few others that i thought could have included the parkers) but they all seemed okay....

If i wired a new 12v straight to the battery, and earthed the stereo to the chassis and tapped into the acc 12v from the cigarette lighter then surely this would fix the problem?? right?? That is of course providing i havent blown a fuse somewhere (can anyone think where?)

Thanks heaps for all the help - very useful!

It's in a 95ish mitsubishi magna wagon (Australia).... The old stereo was just a am/fm radio tape player, with 7 wires going into it - 12v, acc 12v, earth, front left (pos and neg) and front right (pos and neg)..... There were no rear speakers.

Can anybody think of a solution??
