I took my truck to a local dragstrip just to see what it could do. To my suprise the truck would not go past 85 mph. I was curious to know if anyone knew why and if there is any way to disable it or modify it

Do you have the 4.8 L ? If so you can get a power programmer for this vehicle that will :

  • Adjust Shift Points
  • Adjust Shift Firmness
  • *Eliminate Speed Limiter*
  • Recalibrate Speedometer for Larger Tire Sizes
  • Recalibrate Speedometer for Gear Changes
  • Adjust Rev Limits
  • Adjust Cooling Fans
  • Choose from three available Performance Settings
  • We sell these all day long up here and the customer have positive things to say about them. Most of the guys up here love the diesel programmers that give them an extra 100+ horses to their trucks.

Cheap trick is to turn your key to start. Knocks out the computer out of the loop and as long as the clutch isn't pushed/shifted to P or N it won't crank.

The power programmer is 349.99 retail plus ship, it is the same for 4.8,5.3 and 6.0. You can also get a superchips programmer to do the same. And in reality there are many more programmers out there but these 2 sell and installed nearly a hundred. They just plug into your diagnostic port bottom of the dash. You go through and select the options you want and then it will upload into the vehicle computer. Just make sure to program it back to stock if you have any service work or if the dealer hooks there computer to it and flashes it you'll chance damaging it $$$$.

99 mph is the stock setting for newer Chevy trucks to stop accelerating, the cheapist way to remove this without having a laptop and the programs to do it yourself is to get a mail order tune from www.wait4me.com, which runs about 150 bucks, or 75 if you send them your original PCM.

Have to love speed limiters. Goes to show that you should get manual transmissions, hehehe. I know the computer can still limit the engine even with manual.

How does the comp limit the speed? By cutting fuel, or does it have to do with the VSS?

The ecu has speed sense going to it and since it controls the fuel it can change the rate the injectors pulse.
