Hey Guys,

A buddy of mine drives a 2001 Mazda Protege. The dome light does not illuminate when the doors are open. The light has a 3-position switch for "off/dim/bright". He says there is no visible button switch on the door jambs.

So, is anyone out there familiar with these cars? Should the dome light go on when the doors are open? Logic and common sense say "yes", but reality is saying "no".

Any thoughts?

First check the bulb and look for any blown fuses.

Many newer cars incorporate the door trigger switch into the latch mechanism. You can pull the dome light and test the wires there. The door trigger wire should be BLACK/ blue at the driver's kick panel: https://www.alertautomotive.com/diagrams/diagrams.asp

Thanks for the response man. Turns out that the light switch was actually in the "off" position.posted_image

Actually, my buddy didn't realize that this car has a delayed-off on the dome light (he has not owned the car long and he did nto get a manual with it). So he just assumed the "on" positions were permanent "on", so he had it turned "off". He tried it again last night and left it in the "on" position. It illuminated when he opened the door, and then shut off about 60 sec. after the door closed.

Again thanks for the help.
