Not sure about this information but I thought I would relay it to member's anyway....... take into account that is information is to be tested first. If this is not correct, please let me know and I will change it, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless: The new GM's have a class II databus system which runs thru the radio. The vin# have to match the databus computer so the same radio must be reinstalled. VERY IMPORTANT!!!! You must diable the air bag system before removing the radio. To do this you must first pull the air bag fuse then disconnect the two air bag connectors for ecah bag. Then you can remove the radio. Follow this proceedure in reverse putting the fuse back in last. ------------- Jeff

Not 100 % sure if it's just the new 2003 vehicles or if some of the 2002's are affected as well ? ------------- Jeff

That information is incorrect, GM released a while back info stating that it is not neccessary to disconnect the airbags - also there is no problem in removing the radios for good.

Yeah Jeff I saw the same message on the directechs forum. I also think that they are wrong. The only issue that concerns the radio is the theft code. I just make sure that the ignition is on when I remove it.
Never had a problem. It should only lock up if there is no ign. power. Well at least I hope that I'm not mistaken.

I won't post the instructions, but if you get to be buddy-buddy with someone at your local GM dealership they can give you instructions on how to get the code for the radio. That way it's not dangling out of the dash when your trying to work back there. (if your not an installer, don't bother trying, they wont tell you)

you dont need a code on class2 radios, they are coded with the vin of the vechiel and will work even if disconnected, you just cant put it in another vechiel

2003 GM vehicals need to have the radio relocated in the car otherwise you wont have a door chime anymore. As far as the air bags go.. all you have to do is diconnect the battery. with no power to the airbags then they wont blow. ive done many 2003 GMs and thats all you have to do. Al toght the wireing is very sensitive do not probe any wires witha a computer safe test light only use a DMM to test for wires. You will need a relocation harness, the one from scoche is GM06b good luck~

After doing some extensive research on this subjust I have concluded that the removal of the stock radio ( on some models ) will affect the door chime & On-Star ( if applicable ). There are numerous aftermarket harnesses available for the removal of the stock deck ( completely ) and still retain the functions lost aas stated above. You do not need to retain the OEM deck in the vehicle with certain types of harnesses available, but some harnesses you need the OEM deck to be present in the vehicle. https://www.velocitymotorsport.com/install_notes/OBDII.htm ------------- Jeff
