I had an aftermarket cruise control installed yesterday (98 Dakota) and it has never worked. They said that they were not getting a speed reading to the cruise control from the speed sensor, so the speed sensor must be bad. Well, on this model, the speed sensor is actually a multi-purpose speed sensor, so I was skeptical that it could be bad without the truck falling apart, but I took it to get it tested anyway. The computer read no codes and all functions are working properly (speedometer, abs brakes, transmission, no check engine light etc...).So knowing it is not the speed sensor and not the cruise control itself (they said they have a tester for the cruise controls) so you have any other ideas what could be making the tester that they have read that the cruise is not getting a speed signal?

It could be that they connected to the wrong lead or simply have a poor connection. The VSS lead in your vehicle is WHITE/ Orange (8000 pulses per mile) and is located at Pin 27 of the ECM on the passenger's front fender well.

Yeah I thought that might be the case, but unless there are two orange white wires at 27, then I think they already checked that

It wouldn't matter if you had more than one wire at the same pin, they would have continuity, but the installer could have connected to the wrong ORANGE / White wire on another pin, possibly labeled 27 but in another connector. The correct wire should be in a White 32 pin connector at the ECM. l'd have him check it again.

Yeah they pointed the wire out to me and it was in the middle of three connectors of the ECM. These people install hundreds of cruises a year, but seem stumped. I know a little about cars but cannot figure out how the ecm can be getting a fine signal, but they can't tap into that signal. I was thinking it might be a improperly grounded or open wire, but I don;t see how all the systems woudl work if that was the case.

You could always add magnets and a pickup coil and be done with it if that's the only problem with it. BTW, what brand/model cruise control do you have? Have they tried installing another control unit or servo? Did you purchase the unit from the people that installed it? If so, what do they plan to do to rectify the situation?

I don't know much about the first questions, but the company said they were going to look a little closer tomorrow and if they can not fix it or find out definitively what is wrong they woudl just take it out and refund my money. Pretty reasonable if you ask me. The problem is that I need a cruise control, so although i woudl be out no money, I would be no closer to getting one. They are the only place that I can find that install cruise controls regularly in Oklahoma City.

The people that checked the codes on the computer reset the codes. The people at the cruise place said that it is working now. Does anyone think that the codes being reset could have anything to do with the cruise working now?
