This is the console in my Aveo. I would like to change it. I primarily want to paint it the same color as the car. I would also like add in a ipod holder and possibly some speakers, not sure on that one. I have never done FG before so I thought I would outline what I think I have to do based on what I have read on this forum. Please correct me if I am wrong.

1] remove the console from the car and clean up the console of all waxes, greases etc.

2] to make the mold. I need to cover the original console with some sort of release agent. From what i have read I need to cover the whole thing with tin foil. Not sure how to seal it so that I don't ruin the original console. Could I cover it with thin poly plastic first then tin foil?

3] Mix up some resin and using fiber mat cover the whole console. The idea with the mat is to make one smooth surface on the inside as it will become the mold.

4] Continue to add FG layers to the mold. I need to make sure that it is stiff so it will not flex when I go to make the new console. Not sure how many layers I would have to lay up.

5] Release the original console from the mold. Let mold fully harden.

6] Turn the mold over and apply some sort of release agent to the inside of the mold.

7] now lay up layers of FG to the inside of the mold. Again not sure how many to do.

8] Once all the FG has setup then release the new console from the mold. Trim up all edges and cut out all the openings.

9] mix up some Rage gold with some resin to make a paintable type of filler and cover the whole unit and let it set.

10] hours and hours of sanding to get to a paint able surface, paint and install.

Big questions are how to protect the original console and what to use for release agents. Could a guy use gel coat as the first layer in the mold to creat a supper smooth top layer?

thanks in advance

Brad

I used painters tape to mask of what I fiberglass on top of and you can put some turtle wax on top of the tape so it will release. Why don't you just modify the console you have now to hold your ipod and/or speakers??? It would end up being cheaper, PLUS you could still use the stock mounting points to stick that thing back in. I've never really built a mold, but from what I  have read you've got it. I think what they spray inside the mold for release is called PVA??? I could be wrong. Check out http:www.fiberglassforums.com for some really good mold making pics and instructions. Good luck! post pics of the process for us!
