I am wanting to start doing some motorized amp racks that move just a little when powered, screens, headunits, and basically anything really, i like the hidden until switched ideas, stuff coming out of things, and out of hiding. BUT, i dont have any experience with motorized projects. any helpful do and dont's, or rules of thumb or where to get the basic how to's from? anything would be helpful. maybe a robotics class would be helpful. lol

Judging by your signature, I'm confident you'll do OK.

I've used two methods.

#1 is limit switches. These can be microswitches which open or close when the limit is reached. You can also substitute plunger type switches like those usesd for door pin switches or hood pin switch. You can also use magnetic switches.

#2 is current sensing. A window control module like DEI's 529T is connected to motor. When it has reached the limit, the 529T senses a rise in current thus disengaging the motor.

Take a look at this post. MOTORIZATION

You'll see how I did my car.

I also especially like hotwaterwizard's ideas.
