Nice job man. That is so clean. I was thinking about glassing my dash but It just seems like to big of a project and I didnt have a clue on how to get it to mount back up right. A how to would be great tho.  How long does it usually take you to do a dash from start to finish?

i have in the past done a dash in primer in one day. sent it out for paint (which i don't like to do i liek to paint all my own work) that night and installed it the next night. lol. not something i would suggest. but usaly i like to take a about a week on one correctly. i'm working on a costomer right now to get his car in the shop. to do the entire interior. once i get that in i'm going to record a step by step photos. and do a how to on it. i don't have enough pictures of past projects to do it right now. i thought i did but i don't. so keep a check on here for future up dates. i hope to have some up realy soon. thanks for the repost. any questions along the way feel free to ask.

aight guys it's been lonmg enough and i have all the pics together now to do the how to. i'm gonna kinda run through it just to give you guys the basic concept of it. then it's up to your imagination from there. the dash i'm going show is a walk in customer, and i'm not real trilled about putting 6x9 in the dash but it's what he had and thats what he wanted me to put in there. so before i start it wasn't my idea!!!! lol. i'm going to start posting pic tommorrow night. i don't know how many have been keeping up with the post but for those of you who are here ya go. speak at ya soon.

Well Biggi I glad that you finally got it done. It is just in time for me to take a look at what you got going on and steal some ideas and techniques from you. I want to get a drawing up or some type of design of what I want me dash to look like so I can get some ideas on what to do and any helpful hints before I go through trial and error. I am pretty good with glassing and patience but I want to get it right and make my truck a show truck to be in the magazines!

Keep up the good work

here we go guys. first step take out the old dash!! duh. keep it around so you can trace the part that come's in contact with the dash. makes life so much easier. now set that in place. no make your end caps. if your useing the factory door panel trace out the side of the dash so have a perfect line up to the factory doors. this makes it look that much better. in this picture i've already made those Gay 6x9 rings flush mounted of course. once you have your end caps cut and routered out get in the ride and close the door, screw these peices to the inside of the truck and make sure they line up with the door when it's closed. if you lok close i took a peice of 1/4 inch mdf to space it away from the door so it is not touching the door but comes very close. you do not want it to touch. once your all screwed in attach your top plate to your side plates. as in this picture.

this picture show's how close my end caps are,

This should get you going more to come tommorrow!

hey biggi,

I am glassing my dash right now and I noticed on your first set of pictures that the dashes have some pretty sweet ac vents. It would be great if you could direct to me to a good website or something so I can get some of those. I cant be riding around in a custom truck with a fiberglass dash and stock ac vents from the 80's. Also, check out what im doing for my truck and please feel free to give me any pointers or tips. I will post more pictures tonight of what I have done as of now. Thanks and keep up the great work.

ok in this picture i've alreadystared the console and added most of my bracing, these braces alow me to get an idea of how the dash shape is going to look before i even wrap it in fleece.

posted_image

notice where the console meets the dash, i've made to pieces exactly the same size and screwed thm together. top one is set in to place attached to the dash and the bottom to the console this will allow me to have a perfect match up between the console and dash in the end. you'll see more of this as we go on. the big opening in the middle is routered out to accecpt and peice of plexi that will be back lit. and also house the digital gauges nd double din radio.

here are a few pictures of the console. the console has a smaller version of the shape thats in the dash and will also be a back lit plaxi glass peice but this peice will house the switches for the head lights and the neon's in and out of the truck. i'm putting the A/C controls in the glove box in the console. just to make things look a little cleaner in the dash. in this picture you can see the rings i built for the A/C vents also. give me some feed back here and let me know what you think. More to come very soon. this dash and console are already done i have just been posting pictures when i have time. this whole process took me about a week to complete minus paint and installing it of course.

this is the way the finsished mocked up dash should look when it's taken out ,

if you do this right you shouldn't have to keep taaking the dash in and out to test

fit i test fit this dash one time before glassing and one time after, it fit perfect both times.

posted_image

this is after fleece, two layers of 2oz matting body work

and first coat of primer. check out that AC vent test fit

posted_image

notice how i did the steering collum. when i did the second test fit i went ahead and made

a glass peice to cover that open area under the collum.

6x9's how Gay!!! lol not my dash can't see it from my house. lol the dash hasn't come back from paint yet.

this is why i like painting all my own work, now i have to put my whole prodject on hold waiting on the customers painter.

and of course it's probaly going to come back screred up. but what do you do the customer's always right. ,ore to come. wait till you see the plaxi pieces.

plain and simple but pretty cool none the less.

still waiting Im guessing... Hey biggi, I ordered the ac vents in the second photo and They really dont have a way of staying in the ac vent unless they are extremely snug in the ring or something. I havent really figured out a way to get them to stick and was wondering what you have done. I could create a thin piece of glass that goes on my dash that will go inbetween the billet piece and the black plastic piece but I am not sure. Let me know what you did. Thanks man

Hey biggi,

Man I thought I posted a comment on here last week when you posted your last post. I guess I didnt send it tho. Anyways I checked out your site. Im guessing it is still in the works right now. Its looking good though thats for sure. One day I need to drive my happy *** down to ocala and check it out. Sooner or later I will be buying some audio stuff for my truck and If the price is right I"ll get it from you. Anyways, Hows the dash coming along? You havent posted anything for a while. I am having to rebuild the firewall in my truck so I am going slow on the dash now. The entire firewall in my 83 is pretty much rusted out. Plus I think I am going to repaint the entire inside of the truck and paint the steering column instead of leaving it the black color it is. Maybe you could give me a little advice on painting. I want to do most of the work on my truck on my own or atleast give it a shot. Be easy man!
