I am building a sealed enclosure for 1 JL12w6v1 for a home theater setup. According to the owners manual JL recommends a 1.25cubic ft sealed enclosure. Winisd recommends 3.4 cubic feet. Just wondering if there would be any advantage or disadvantage to either.

I would go with what jl says to use. They spent a lot ot time developing that woofer

I realize this is a very general question and the answer should be based on my preferences. What I am wondering is if anyone has had any good results with any type of driver in a home theater setup with this driver what type of box was used

For home use, go with the largest enclosure that will work with the woofer. Room gain vs. cabin gain. Look at what the HT people do and you will see some monster sub enclosures. My guess is, you end up trading out for a sub engineered for home use. We all do. Typical thing is, you want to use what you have on hand but if it isn't the right thing for the job you change up.

Yes but how does one figure out what the largest enclosure that a speaker will handle is??? Can you point me in a direction as to where i would find some good ht info

You figure out the largest enclosure size by using WinISD or another box building program. Your post says you already use WinISD, so I don't understand the question. If you go to a HT forum they will get you off of that car audio sub, pronto. ------------- Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

a W6 has a good amount of excursion capability. i would only be worried about over excursion on the really low notes(30hz and below). now whether it will sound good in a large enclosure is another thing. a W6 is made for the car environment so smaller enclosures are implied because cars are usually smaller than rooms. it is optimized to work well in a reasonable sized enclosure that would fit into a car. a larger than recommended enclosure might give you a smoother response but at the cost of lost output. which do you prefer? -------------

WinISD and other programs such as Unibox provide the tools to view excursion when all the variables (power, air displacement, Xmax,etc.) are known. As you work on sizing the enclosure, look at the excursion chart. When you see excursion exceed Xmax, consider the frequency at which it occurs and at what power level. It will exceed at some point but may be below your system's frequency range. HT will demand lower frequencies than car audio, so woofers that are made for HT are more workable than those made for vehicles. I built one box according to jl specs. I am running this amp from parts express

i am overall pleased with the setup
Its not too overwhelming i have the sub wired to 12ohms so not getting full power but not that big of a deal
i dont see the excursion chart on winisd though

FYI on that chart you couldn't find in WinISD: build 0.50a7, the version that has been available for the past few years, has a cone excursion chart. It's in the pull down menu above your project window where you also find all of the other important charts that you have to consult as you make changes to the enclosure. It's actually the most important consideration of all the available charts.
