i am probably going to have to make a place to put my pioneer nav system in a 99 Durango.  The  best place i can think of is the center console next to the 4WD shifter, so I'm going to make it out of fiberglass to make it look like its supposed to be there.  I need help on finishing though, because I want it to look stock how do I finish it? And, how do I create the DIN sized opening?

this is the easiest way to do it...cut a hole in the panel that you want to put the radio, nav, tv...what ever. rough the plactic up on the console and the ring to get it to the bare plastic. and wipe it with wax and grease remover. let it dry and bring all the nasties out of the plastic and whipe it clean with a clean rag. then take the ring from the nav, radio, or take the tv apart and use the front plastic face. with the ring or face in hand take some ca glue (2 part super glue) and glue it in place where you want it....then you have the opening for the radio, or tv face with all the buttons cut in. no worring if it is crooked or if you have a gap around it......then you can take duramix or a good body filler and fill around it and make it look like part of the console. when you are all set on the filling, you sand it smooth with a 40 grit then a 50 or 60 grit. tape of the console, just a little bigger than the hole...say an extra 2-3 inches all the way around. then spray the area you worked with polyester primer, sand with a 80, 220, then 400 grit........now here is the tough part....do you want a texture or not.....if you do get some rocker panel spray and play with it, or SEM texture coat. both will take practice to get an ok look. the other option it to sand the texture off the whole console. sand it to a 400 grit then you can dye it to match the car again.

sounds good, but I'm trying to make something to sit on top of my center console, without tearing into the original one.  Also, there has to be somewhere I  can buy the vinyl to cover it with, instead of trying to do a spray finish.

you will still have to shoot a couple screws in the console to mount the pod. you can get vinyl at a local upolstry shop or at select products if you have to.

if you want to you can just build a frame from mfd and wrap it in fleece or trunkliner, or grill cloth. then sand and smooth and cover.
