I have a 1998 Lincoln Town Car.
Hertz HiEnergy 6.5 components are installed in the doors. The tweeters on are on the door panel flush mounted while the mids are on a custom mdf bracket screwed to the actual door not the door panel. The mids sit behind the factory grill.
I noticed that there is a sizeable gap between the mdf bracket and the door panel. I was wondering if I use something like weatherstripping foam to seal that gap. Will the foam absorb the sound more than keep a sort of seal between the mdf bracket and the door panel grill.
Has anyone tried to do this or is there another way??

The gap between the speaker and the grill should not affect anything. As long as the sound waves from the rear of the speaker are not allowed to contact the sound waves from the front side of the cone,there should not be an issue. So make sure the MDF ring is sealed to the door skin.

I was thinking that if I sealed off that gap, that all the music that was playing would be directed through the factory grill as opposed to some of it getting muffled inside the door panel. You know what I mean?
I found some thick weatherstripping. I'll experiment and see if there is a difference.
