I have a 1979 VW Bus that, originally, had the option of a circa 5.5-6" diameter mono speaker in the center of the dash, pointing at the windshield:

Obviously, a mono speaker won't cut it with a modern head unit posted_image

, so although my front door panels are already cut for speakers (at ankle height), I'd like some sounds up a bit closer to my ears - I'm sure that my legs would enjoy the music, but...

I was thinking about putting a couple of 3.5" speakers onto angled bases facing outwards, but still up under the dash in the standard speaker position.

What would be the best way forwards? Normal MDF trim rings on some spacers, or making an angled mount for them?

there are a few speakers out there that have a dual voice coil woofer and seperate right and left tweeters. custom autosound sells some ovals.
surely someone has round ones.
have you looked for that type of speakers?

I haven't, no - I suppose that even an oval of a small enough size would work, if there's no round one.

https://vintagevibes.net/volkswagen.htm has one for vw dashes... dont know if its the same size you need.

part number 31005DVC was the one on ebay i saw. its a 5 inch.

It would be better to keep the speakers down lower. It's a matter of audio imaging. The more equal distance the speakers are from your ears, then the better the sound balance will be. Under the dash in the center loses stereo sound and makes it sound like it is a mono speaker still. Being that much closer isn't going to affect the quality of sound as much as being louder.

I personally like the ankle area. If you measure out the distances, the kick panels are RELATIVELY the same distance from the ears.
