I am designing a custom box for a spot that has very little room to work with.It is impossible to use mdf for the design except perharps for bracing. l think only about 1/4 of the box (lower portion) will be touching metal of the vehicle. The rest will be open air or against soft portions of the trunk.
Will fiberglassing work for this?? I see it may be the only way, but i need to make sure that it will work before setting off on a dead end path.
If so how thick should I make it and what materials are recommended for this type of box.
There will be 1 12" sub going into the box.

what kind of vehicle is it...what location of this vehicle would you like to put the box? We might have some good ideas.

The vehicle is a nissan 350z. In the far back corners under the trunk mat there is styrefoam inserts. One is used for spare tire jack, other is useless. I want to use this for the airspace. It is approximately .65 cubic feet with just the foam, so the rest of the airspace will be above the trunkmat and against the walls of the trunk. I dont want to cut the side carpet if possible but i am willing to chop the trunk mat. The subs i am using call for 1 cubic foot, and this should be no problem with the added space above the mat. I want the sub angled about 45-60 degrees upwards, and facing towards the center of the car. Will it be simple to contour the inside of the trunk ( the visible part above the trunk mat) ? i will find a picture of the area i am talking about if that will help. But from the tight spaces i will be working with i dont think i can use much mdf. Shoot me some ideas guys.. this will be my first fiberglassing...i consider myself both very artistic and mechanical so im sure i can do this with a little guidance. thanks -josh

Hey Josh, Shoot me a pic of the trunk and I'll see if I can help you design a box. Even if the enclosure is only .65 cu. ft. that's OK too, you can use Dacron filler to enlarge the vloumne by 20 % ------------- Jeff

ok here is a pic similar to what i want to do. there is a about 6.5" deep triangular area under the floor mat to the metal flooring of the trunk, which is also contoured around the spare tire and also the left wheel well. I will use this for airspace. I want to match the contour of the bottom and also of the sides so that it is a "perfect fit" I am having trouble seeing how to do this. I know i can build up the sides and bottom first. But when i attach the speaker ring, how do i overlay the fiberglass so as not to mess up the side (visible) contour? Also, what kind of reinforcements do i need?

ok sounds like you know what you want, but just for your info or incase you did not know, behind your driver seat in almost all 350"s you have an access pannel that once you remove it holds an over sized 10" woofer...I cut it out and installed a 12"kicker comp vr and with alot of dynamat and a good amp..:D..it bumped pretty good.....
