Hello all, new member and first post here.  I'm working on glassing out the rear deck of my BMW 330.  My plan is to mold in a playstion 2 in the center of the deck and also cover the factory speakers with polm momo speaker grills.  The deck is going to be painted glossy black with the speaker grills in silver to match my interior theme.  I've included a link to my work in progress.  I'd like som pointers to make sure I'm heading in the right direction.  My main problem right now is sanding the edges of the ps2 mold to a nice rounded edge.  I guess that will just take a lot of patience and sanding.  I'd like to know what kind of primer fillers I should use to help finalize the deck.  is it necessary to use filler on the whole piece or can I get away with using a high build primer to fill the gaps.  The pics can be found in this post:

Thanks,

you could have made the rounded edges by building a 1/2" MDF frame around the PS2 and using a 1/4" roundover bit on the edges.

consider wrapping the whole thing in a layer of fleece.

high build primers will fill all of the pinholes but will not fill gaps like the one in the front of the PS2 cover.

The reason I stretched fleece over the ps2 instead building a wood frame is b/c I wanted the piece not to look thick.  Just wanted it to protrude as little as possible.  I'm more into subtle designs, didn't want the unit to look like something extra that didnt belong there.  So filler over the rest of the deck wouldn't do the job.  Don't want to build up the deck too much with extra material.

The edges of the PS2 mold are going to be squared off even if you sand the hell out of it (you'll just sand through the edges). you should be able to spray a few layers of high build primer on there and sand it smooth (you might have to put a layer a polyester resin on the parts of the back deck that didn't get glassed yet.). It looks good. Post more pics as you get more done.

thanx for the replies.  Actually I know the ps2 mold will have an edge just wanted it a bit rounded, not too sharp/angled looking.  What kind of primer do you recommend? Also how is it applied, I'm assuming a spray gun, which I don't have.

The Duratech surfacing primer works

The spray polyfill also works well but is a little pricey.

You can also get featherfill at most auto body & paint supply shops.

All of the high build primers are catalized with MEKP and have to be shot through a gun. If you don't have a gun/compressor setup you'll have to do it the hard way. Apply regular bondo and sand it smooth. The piece you're doing isn't that big so it should be to bad to bondo.
