I heard its better to do a layer then let it cure then repeat, as opposed to doing them all at once, is this true?

If you lay up to much at once it will warp or crack. How much you can lay up depends on ambient temperature and how much catalist you mix in with the resin. I normally go no more than 1/4" at 1% (assuming it's 95 degrees outside and I'm in the shade)

When I was doing my glass boxes this weekend, I made my mix so that I had about 10 minutes of working time before it began to gel.  By the time I finished my first layer, I had about five minutes to wait until it began to harden.  I did a few layers like this and then waited a couple of hours to let it really cure.  It worked well for me, but I'm still pretty green at doing this so there might be a better way of doing it.  Any old pros care to comment?

A 10 minut pot life is a little to fast, especially for big projects, but then agin I'm in Florida and it's hot down here.

a trick for building up your layers quicker is to mix your resin 50/50 with bondo and mix together very well, then add as much hardner as you would if the amount you have was all fiberglass resin.

Use resin expander for high build projects where you need thickness without the expense and the wait. As far as waiting for each layer to dry, I do 2 layers and then allow for dry time and allow the mold to cool off before appyling another 2 layers. Work my way up to 6-8 layers for enclosures and this is plenty strong enough.

What does the resin expander accomplish???? Besides obviously expanding the resin!

okay...pretend you have one gallon of resin you are about to use...How much resin harder would you use....Okay now pretend you have that same one gallon container...put half a gallon of resin and half a gallon of bondo, do not add any hardener yet, mix the two compounds together really well...now once you are sure that the 1 gallon mixture is fully mixed add the same amount of resin harder as you would for the one gallon of pure resin and mix well...thats the only harder you need....then paint, paste, or apply however you would if it were straigh resin...doe that make it clear...it that what you were asking?

I'm still a little bit confused, so no fiberglass mat with the 50/50 fiberglass resin and body filler? if no mat, how many layers would you apply? Thanks in advance.
