I was wondering what you guys first fiberglassed even if it was car audio related? I have heard people say practice on something small, but I was curious on what you guys actually started out before you jumped into kick panels, sub enclosures, etc. Would be good for the newbies to know so we have some practice before we mess up our interiors ;) ------------- Integration20

Well, i'm still a newbie and I didn't really do a project yet but I've got my hands a little dirty by messing around with fiberglass and read as much as I could about it and the different kinds of fiberglass. I would suggest a small box, maybe made out of MDF and just make the subwoofers rise out of it, that would be a pretty basic project and wouldn't take forever. Or you could do a side panel or kick pod. Aslong as you cover your car up good it won't be ruined. -------------

Yeah, I was thinking of kick pods first, but wasn't sure if that was basic enough. I have to relocate my ecu though. I'll have to see where I want to move it to first.

my first fiberglass work i ever did was Kick panels. they turned out better than i could have hoped for being my first time and all, they did have a few imperfections, but nothing that was too bad to cover up with the texture finish i used(wrinkle paint lol!) all you have to do is research and take your time when learning, it took me about 4 days to do the kick panels but that is because i had to learn to mix resin and bondo, and find the glue sticks and gun in my house. im sure my next project will be easier and quicker too.

I can't even remember that far back, but I think it was two separate 12 " subs that mounted on the side of the trunk for a Integra. The project warped on me because the temperature wasn't consistent and I had to cut about 8 " back from the flat protion where the sub was and refiberglass the warped section. After that it was all good.

for my first project i made two boxes to fit in the rear corners of my trunk. i just read all the tutorials and stuff, then decided to go for sh*t. it wasnt even as hard as i expected, but alot messier than i thought it would be.

ditto, two enclosures for flush-mounted 12's in the trunk corners. I just read and re-read websites a few times before and while making the boxes. I finished them off with carpet to match the trunk and they wound up looking (and sounding) really good. I managed to waste my first batch of resin and make a big mess too.

Thanks guys, I thought when people ment practice on something small I thought they ment non car audio related or even not car related. First I have to sound deaden and then I will be fiberglassing. I'm going to start with my kick panels I guess, unless I can find something else. ------------- Integration20

Is fiberglass not dangerous for health? Like cause cancer and stuff? I hope I got the wrong info.

With the proper precautions, the fiberglass dust and the fiberglass resin will not affect you.

When using the resin and hardener mixture make sure you are using a PROPER respirator ( the vapor barrier type ) and safety goggles with latex gloves in a well ventilated area. When sanding you should be using hearing proyection, gloves, safety goggles and a respirator ( the carbon particulate filter type ) and full length shirts or a smock.

After reading this, I think I won't even think about playing with fiber glass since I am not a professional and do not have a garage and all the proper protection. I now remember my oldest brother used to fabricate fiberglass parts for car bodies way back home about 12 years ago but I forgot to ask him about it. (I never even visited his workshop since I was a kid.) Now I remember faintly, him telling me how careful you gotta be etc but I had no clue at that time (nor now even until I read the above post)
Good to know now at least. Thanks for the info.
