I've seen doors that have damping material covering the whole thing, others that cover only the inner-metal frame on the door (not the holes), and others which cover the inner and outer metal frame of the door.

Which do you prefer when doing an install, and for what reasons?  Do you cover the entire surface of the car (including empty spaces), or do you just apply damping material to the metal?  Why?

personally i prefer covering just the metal..... air between the holes doesn't resonate much. It is a waste of dynamat. The outer door metal is a nice touch and is recommended but you must pay for the xtra dynamat to do that surface as well. The main reasons for dynamating the whole inner door skin (including holes) is either laziness (you dont have to cut out all the xtra), or a false sense of secuity that you doors are acting like a sealed enclosure, no matter how much dynamat you use, they will NOT be sealed.  Also trying to seal ytour door with dynamat is useless becasue it will flex anyway, kinda like a baffle box.... So in conclusion, deaden the metal, as much of the metal as you can reasonably afford. All that wasted mat on deadening the air :) you can use on other peices of meal, a little dynamat on each of the keys in you keychain can silence them....only an installer : )

100% agreed. If you are going to do a job, do it right. Don't be lazy

I seem to have given the impression that I'm planning to do the whole door/ metal surface, and this is not so.  I was just trying to get some insight as to why you do it the way you do (however that may be).  I've seen a huge variation in how damping material's applied, and it's given me some curiosity in regards to the benefits of each method.  Anyone from the other side of the fence care to comment?  It'd also be nice to hear from someone who does cover the entire surface.

the people who cover the whole thing are lazy and uneducated..... I Graduated from the Dynamat Dynamic Control University...:)... ya i know its a joke.   I actually have a diploma directly from Dynamat....   Anyway, honestly you should only cover the metal....   I'm sorry i had to bring out the sad diploma but.... well education speaks for its self... (laugh)
