Hi,
I saw these pics on a car website and was interested what the brown layer inside the mold is. Any ideas?

looks to me like a 2 piece fiberglass box with the insides sanded and primered with that cheap brown primer by brite touch. Thats just my opinion from what I can see.

Hmm so you think that is just primer eh? For some reason it looks like a different material to me. If you look along the edge you can see a "line" where it goes from fiberglass to mystery material. Who knows maybe it is just primer.

True, the only thing that gets me thinking its primer is that there are areas along the edge that are chipped, so it could be a nasty shade of orange-yellow paint on fiberglass. I can see where it looks kinda like a plastic type covering but the chips along the edges, particularly on the lower right side of the box with the open whole, would suggest its a paint of some sort.

Definately looks like some kind of primer or paint. If you look at where the speaker mounts it fades as well as the chips. On second thought it could possibly be foam of some sort.

it does look coated in primer or something, but I really don't think that's fiberglass. Foam's the best bet, the only way something fiberglass could come out so perfect would be through a mold and that piece look like a one off.

that looks like a fiberglass box for an 8 inch sub. the part on the left covers the sub when not in use. its a homemade stealth box and the orange you see could be a gel coat or a primer.

my .02 is that is it a plug that they made and primed to replicate the face of the enclosure. if you look at the part on the left, it goes in too deep to be a cover. also the back side of the piece on the left isnt covered at all. also the parts that are chipped or rubbing thru are the parts where it would be tight and where the 2 pieces could be pryed at to get the 2 pieces apart after the resin dried on the duplicate being made.

yeah youre right. i didnt think about that. my second guess is that the part on the left is a mold from the part on the right. so theyll just keep using the left part to keep making parts like the one on the right. the face will be the same but theyll start from scratch on the back of the enclosure according to the different car application. that orange crap might be some kind of mold release if thats the case.

It looks like a two piece mold. Maybe they're using it to make ABS or other plastic enclosure fronts in quantity. Where'd you get the picture from?

tooling gel and gelcoat, thats how you use a mold to make a part, in this case the face of the box. You can get them mixed in any color you want, and the parts will come out absolutely flawless if you know what you are doing. Looks like someone laid the gelcoat on too thin in the corners, it is chipped a little and raw fiberglass is showing through.
