Ok been reading for the last 4 days about glassing a enclosure.  Som esay if you can stand on it its strong enough. . is there a good rule of thumb for this??? also ive read when layering \

1st person - 1 layer at a time

2nd person - No more than 3 layers at a time

3rd person - The most you can at one time

I would think that the most you can at once that way it all dries together.  what are your guys opinion?

i was taught the more layers u can do at one time the stronger it will come out.

I usually do up to 3 layers at a time.  I don't know about it being stronger or not though.  I guess there is less chance of bubbles showing up if you do multiple layers.

well, it can be done anyway really, but for the best strenght its usually best to do a layer at a time when applying it. I say that because with just one layer u can work out the air bubbles. With this being said, it is possible (as I do it all the time) to apply one layer, work out the air bubbles, and add another layer, work out the bubbles, add a layer.... and so on and so forth. I usually only add about 3 layers at a time like Steven cuz its usually bout then that the fumes make me dizzy haha.

Well, specing out how many layers can be hard. It also depends on the weight of glass mat you use. The lighter the mat, the more layers you need.

I am working with 2 10" JL (W6, I think). I am using 2 oz chopped mat, and adding Q-cells, and chopped strand in the resin. We have already used 5 gallons of resin, and have not done the front yet. We already have 4 layers on, which is about 1/3" thick in its thinnest spot. Each sub will handle about 1000 Watts, so 4 or 5 layers should be plenty. This is where we stopped.

Remember that fiberglass strength comes from curves. A 1/4" thick fiberglass wall with 3 or 4 medium curves is actually stronger than a 3/4" MDF flat piece of board.

Our enclosure will be ported, this also adds to the question, "Is it thick enough?" A sealed box has more pressure, where a port can aleviate some stress.

Another relevant factor is the amount of fiberglass and MDF being used. Are the bottom, back, and sides made of (at least) 3/4" MDF, and you are only covering the front with glass? If so, you will need to mix resin (a little Hot would be best), and just add Q-cells/chopped strand, and paint all the joints from the inside where the glass meets the MDF.

And no, standing on the box is not a good judgement of strength, some of us being lightweights (particularly me). Haha!

if you do too many layers at once it will take longer to dry

stereofreak,
Q-cells, along with Talc, and several other additives for resin mixes to add strength and act as a filler. Check US Composites....

And back to the original question posted. If the MEKP is mixed perfect, you should wait about 15-20 minutes prior to laying another layer. As the layers cure together, it will build strength. Keep the air bubbles out!!!
