Although that site was cool, it was not really what i was looking for. I'm talking about personally redoing them, hah, with the help of my freinds mom, she's great at sewing and stuff.

pull the current covers off to use as a pattern, have the new ones sewed, and install them with hog rings like the originals came off

that's those clips that hold the cover to the seat bottom

What holds the cover down at the seams to the top of the seat. It seems as if at some of the seams where the seats contour edges are that the cloth is held down to the foam.

there are rods about the size of a coathanger holding them down in the center of the seat.

Thack, are the rods attached to the cloth and then the foam or are they just attached to the cloth alone to give it structure at the seams?

Thanks

they usually go through a pocket sewed into the fabric, then hog ringed in place

archemedes is exactly right.  should be like a loop in the fabric. Should be slits in the padding of the seats.  Kinda difficult to get factory cover off the seat the first time.  Good luck with it. I didnt have the patience to do it myself, but it nothing more than following the patern. What kind of car?

Depends on the shop and the material. Where are you from? Someone on here may have a place near them if your not from virginia.

Here in CA, the local adult continue education ( Props to LA Puente ROP )  had a upholstery class ( free + material ) which I was able to redo my seats and headliner, with the instructor help and the class equipment ( Commercial sewing machine, air comp. hand tools etc. ) . Try looking into that.

i was planning on doing my own upholstery also and went to talk to a few people that did it professionally in my area. the advice i got was to number the seperate peices so you know which goes where and use those as patterns, and remember, you sew it inside out so make sure that you have the right side up and left-right is correct. i was told you need a professional machine to do that hard rolled thing on the seam if your seats have em.  i didnt trust myself on the seats i wanted done eventually so i picked up a cheap ruined seat from a junkyard to practice on.  good luck

Im re-upolstering the seats of my 86 Cutlass, but if anyone knows cutlass seats, they're not exactly easy to wrap. They have these big cushions attached to them, which I dont want to just remove. What should I do?

You may want to post a picture but alot of the older cars you have to "reinvent" a whole new pattern.

You should also check out "The 'Tex", aka VW Vortex, it is a VW forum with a lot of info.
