Is the shape of the box importaint when making a ported box, or does the sound primary depend on the actual volume of the enclosure ?

The sound vary according to the size and shape of the port. If you have a traditional round port, you will get port noise and the tunable frequency will vary as well. If you go with a rectangular port, the port noise will be alot less and the frequency will vary again.

Volume is much more important than the shape. Especially when building a vented enclosure because they're much more affected by changes in enclosure volume.
