Subject: will fiberglass enclosures crack?
Date Posted: August 25, 2004 at 4:29 PM

I was told today that if I make fiberglass enclosures for my RE XXX 15's that the boxes won't hold up for daily abuse. I asked if that would be the case even if I built the boxes really thick. They said they will crack under that much pressure. Is there any truth to what this guy is saying? Thanks in advance...

Well, what are you supposed to make a box out of? Fiberglass is stronger then wood, so are we supposed to build a box out of aluminum. Who ever told you that is a moron.

that dude is wrong.  if the fiberglass will flex, it might crack, but that means its not strong enuf which means it is not thick enough and it needs another layer or more. Fiberglass + resin make it strong not resin alone but you will need at least 5 layers to make it strong enough

wow, some poeople just amaze me with their whitty knowledge of stuff they have no knowledge of. rangers 100% correct in this instance T.Hill. Who ever said that is probably trying to sound smart or something but in effect has just made a fool of themselves because I have seen 4 RE XXX 12's in fiberglass enclosures before and they sure as heck weren't cracked and they were LOUD as... well.... you have some 15's so u know how loud they get lol.

Look. If you build fiberglass correctly, it'll last forever and be virtually indestructable. If you build it crappy and dont use enough, thats when u get Mr. Know-it-all's trying to tell you stuff like that. Tell him to get bent, and then go make urself a kick ass enclosure.

Thats what I thought. I've never heard anyone on here say that fiberglass wasn't strong enough as long as it was built right and to the right thickness. I think he was trying to discredit all the things I'm doing with my system like the JBL/Crown sub amp and my choice of subs. He of course tried to sway me over to the W7 from my RE's. He said the I could get the same output from 1 13W7 that I'll get from 2 XXX 15's. That's about the same time he let me know all about his crack habit....
Thanks again guys

Oh yeah, those JBL Crown amps really suck. That's why none of the top competitors use them. Oh wait, Gates, Eldridge and Biggs use them. Hmmm. Maybe this guy doesn't know everything after all.

w7's will hit no doubt, but one 13w7 will not hit as hard as 2 15 xxx

They let me sit in a truck that they have 1 12W7 running off a JL 1000/1. It sounded good, but not as good as they hyped it up to be. I just can't bring myself to that much money just because it's says "JL" and everyone thinks its cool. I'll stick with my XXX's and spend the extra money on cd's.

2 13w7's on 2 jl 1000/1's in a extended cab silverado sounds pretty good though, (some of my friends have two much money)(one 10w0 is a lot for me)

Man, some of these people are just out to make a sell. They try their hardest to sell the most expensive stuff, like perhaps JL audio? lol. Just cuz it costs the most and gets the most hi-profile reviews doesn't make it the best bang for the buck.

yeah, ranger, 2 13w7's running off 2 1000/1's would be sick in a truck, as long as you have the cash to get it.

I agree about the high profile reviews. I wish CA&E would have a comparo with the likes of W7's, MTX 9500's, DD 9500's, Diamond audio TDX's, Eclipse Titaniums, and of course the XXX's. At least then, no matter who won, the lesser known(underground) brands would get some spotlight.

i hate salesmen like that, , i'll never buy from one like that, , , and since i hate them, , i'll never act like one, , so i'll continue to sell the product for what its worth , , not what i try to make them think its worth.   If a customer disbelives me that the product im selling is better, , i wont say bla bla i know my stuff, , i'll just nicely let them sit in my truck and listen, if that dosn't impress them, then it wasn't meant to be.

Any who, , theres no way a 13" driver could put out more than a total of 30" of drivers, like common.

I have seen fiberglass crack, , , it was only because it was to thin, it flexed to much, , and even then, , i think i was just the paint, , not the actual glass.

It's good to hear that there is still some respectable salesmen out there. I tend to research everything online on websites and forums before I visit the shops. That way I know if they are full of sh!t and wether or not I can trust them. Plus I get to hear what the products in person.

I do plan on making my boxes as thick as need be to avoid flexing. Would it help after I get them to the right thickness to use some spray SoundKill on the inside of the enclosure?

Put pine cone's in the box, , it'll work better than any sound dampening, , leaves work too, , especialy the ones off the groung with the snails on them.  The wetter the better.posted_image

nah, not leaves. You want to use sand, it works excellent. And if you dont have access to sand you can always put cow menure in there and acheive the same effect.

What was the name of the competitor that used concrete in his enclosure way back in the day? It was in a Cougar and I think his name was Bud Wentz or something like that.
