I just layed down foil and tape and set down a solid layer of fiberglass chop mat, its completely dry and hard, yet still has some flex, how many layers of chop mat should i use? Also, when I've added another layer of chopmat, should I go out every few hours and lay down a coat of resin? I've read over 4 sites and got somewhat of an idea. I just dont wanna mess this up. Any information would be reallllly helpful. I can post pics later.

resin without fiberglass mat/cloth doesnt add any strength. i dont think a little flex in the floor layer will hurt anything depending on what your design is for the top piece. good luck

What is better to use for the box...the chop mat or the cloth stuff? The people at shucks didn't even know they stocked it, lol.

chop mat is way better than cloth or fleece but it is much more exspensive.

I think you have that backwards. Fiberglass cloth is more expensive than mat.

You're going to want quite a few layers for that enclosure. You can bulk it up with a layer of Coremat in between your layers of chop mat. US Composites has that for $8.75 a yard. Cheaper and quicker than multiple layers of mat but also tougher to work with.

Fleece?  I think he means to reinforce the shaped mold...

How many layers should i use? I've layed down 2-3 layers of mat. Its pretty hard. I have the shell of the tire well, just the bottom part. I think the 3 layers is good, but I want a second opinion, it needs to be able to support the basss from a Kicker 15" L5 with a 750W RMS D class amp going to it.

Thanks for the advice, back to the basement I go!

The basement may not be the best place to do your fiberglassing. They're going to find you passed out in a pile of resin and glass fibers. Not a good look. Find a well ventilated area (go outside).

wow, , basement!  Dosn't your house smell like fiberglass resin??  Your family must be walking around bumping into walls.

use 6-10 layers for that. you don't want flexing, it will cause distortion. chop mat is the way to go, props on that.... depending on how your gonna finnish the box, you can use woven mat on the areas that will be painted/covered. also if you are goin to paint it, add some micro balloons to your resin for your last layer... good luck, post pictures

Hey All, got some pics, I put down a solid 6 layers of chop mat. The wood backing looks kinda ghetto, but was needed, the box wouldn't fall in and there was issues, so i made that. It fits "liiiike a glove"  Its strong too, well look at the pics. Any feedback would be cool. You all have been the coolest and super helpful!
