alright guys, i just joined a few days ago, and i've already used some cloth and resin, and the bondo-glass in a can stuff, so i get the general idea of glassing but say if i wanted a box, i'd build parts of it in wood, then use dowels and rings to have the subs sit where i want them to be, then i use liek an old tshirt, or fleece and wrap it nice and tight, and then spread resin all over it, once it's harden, i sand it a little bit, and then i add "Fiberglass Matt" right? and make it like 1-3 layers to make sure it's strong enough..i know you use cloth basically to make the mold, but could you use cloth instead? just take alot more right?

well that's all i wanted to know, i'm pretty sure i'll use matt since it needs to be strong, but i'll do the first layer or so in cloth to get the form all nice and perfect...

well anyhelp will be great, thanks guys

BTW anybody have progress pictures of build, forming molds, for subs, amps, lcd screens, headliner anything post some pics, i've gotten some off this forum but if anybody has any on the harddrive that iwll share please do

thanks again

im working on my first sub enclosure as we speak. Im letting the 4th layer dry. Im using the mat myself with a piece of fleece (sweatshirt material) for the top form..as for just using fleece alone..i actually have noticed that some people just use grill cloth and keep adding layers of that instead of mat. But i have no idea of the strength this will make.

Yes the MDF should be used to for flat parts. It is stronger than the fiberglass will be, unless you put alot of layers down. The MDF should be used to get the form you want when you wrap the box in fleece. 1-3 Layers is a little light. You may want 6 for it to be sturdy enough for subs. I got pics i can show you, I will upload them somewhere later.

I did the project about 7 months ago, it is posted on here, please dont leave me comments, this is for learning purposes for PGT. I added the fleece, glasses it, then added 6 layers of fiberglass mat, and sanded, i dont think i showed the bondo process. Start at box7.gif.

alright so mainly , kinda build the structure from wood, kinda like the bottom, sides, and rear, and then use dowels and then wrap it in fleece, soak it in resin, then use chop mat, for like 4 good layers? and that's good then? what about those boxes people make and basically the whole thing is made from fiberglass...where it's in a corner of the trunk or hatch, how many layers do you put there? basically do you just put the same amount of layers on all sides right? so i'd put like 5 layers of mat on top, sides, bottom the whole thing...makin it all equal. and just use dowels and the rings for the subs, then glass away

well let me know if that's the right way

and thanks for the pics 93accordse i got them saved....

then i just have to sand and go from there with bondo and so on.....

Pretty much yeah, you have the basic idea. On the all FG trunks you must mask off/foil the part you want fiberglassed and molded to the contour of the trunk. Then you must let it dry, pull it out of the trunk, and add layers to it, cut off excess and then add the sub rings, wrap in fleece and resin, then add more fiberglass, and from there you bondo, sand, bondo, get ready for paint or carpet, suede, twede, ect. I am going to be doing a fiberglass project soon, i'll make sure i go step by step in my post. Its an install for a friend, he has a 99 integra, and 2 audiobahn 12's, they will be pointing magnet out. Box will be a challenge. Good Luck on your first project.
