I'm building a box for behind the seat in my pickup, and I have a question on how I should finish it.  I"m building it out of 3/4" MDF, but I don't want to carpet it.  Is there something that I could use to layer over the MDF, then paint?  I think just painting the MDF might look a little off.  Thanks!

Coat it with polyester resin. Use a fairly light coat and let it hardent. Then sand it down with 100-400 grit going between the grits till its smooth. Then fill in the pit holes with bondo and glaze resand and smooth it all out. Primer it down, fill it any more imprefections, primer again and paint. Painting strait MDF doesnt work well because the primer tends to sink into the wook giving u an uneven surface. When the resin soaks into the wood it soaks fairly evenly so there's less work to be done.

hey just some advice to whoever, if you're goin to paint the mdf (which i wouldn't but...) take the box (if size allows) and soak it in water for a minute to let the random wood fibers expand.  let it dry and sand it smooth.  do this bout two or three times.  saves on the primer.  you might even be able to do this with the resin but i doubt it since the resin is water resistant/proof.  I did my mdf box in resin and it turned out smooth and glossy.  I did it like two or three years ago before I had a lot of knowledge of resin and painting so it wasn't super but for my first box it looks decent.
