i was wondering how to attach the fleece to the mold when you go to make the final shape you want. i know how to make the mold and everything, but this part kind of confuses me. i have made stand alone enclosures before, but havent made a mold yet, and thats my next project. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

It's basically the same way as you would with a stand alone piece. I have used spray adhesive and at times I have even used a glue gun (time consuming) to attach the fleece to the outer edges of the mold. Just be sure to trim the excess and maybe leave about 1/4 of an inch all the way around. When you resin the piece make sure you only hit it till the very edge of the mold, try not to resin the 1/4" that sits around the very outer edge, after the mold is done and complete, you can even trim that 1/4" excess a little closer for a cleaner look on the edges. Good luck! Hope this helped a little... ------------- Im a fiberglass whore!!

Either glue or staples depending on the application. Staples if you're going to resin the attachment area. Otherwise glue will work and the resin should bond to your MDF if you soak it thoroughly. Resin makes glue pull up so keep that in mind.

thanks for the info. i was thinking staples, because i knew that the resin would make the glue come apart, so i thought stapling it would be safer, as long as i resin that area real well. thanks again!

If you have a mold then why would you use fleece instead of just fiberglass?

I think he may be misusing the term mold. I think he is talking about the frame or skeleton. At least that's the assumption I made.

sorry if i confused anyone here... trying to do my best to explain this... i want to make a mold of the passenger side rear hatch area in my grand cherokee, so that the enclosure contours the side of the jeep. i know about taping off the area, and resining and matting the part i want to get the contour, and making a mdf base. but im not clear on is once the base is made and the part that sits against the side of the jeep is resined, and i make the speaker ring so that i have a skeleton, how do you attach the fleece to the part that is resined? i know i can staple it the mdf base, but can i staple thru the fiberglassed part of the mold? or should i use a strong adhesive? because i know that resin make the adhesive seperate sometimes, so thats the part im not real sure of. i hope i explained this better. thanks!

I understood what you were saying, and I'd say use spray adhesive, but in order to prevent the adhesive from lifting, you dont resin down that far. You only resin till the exact edge where the FG mold meets the fleece. Take a look at the pic below. The red line indicates the fleece, you see how it runs over the edge of the box, thats where you spray the adhesive and bond the fleece to the box. The yellow part of the fleece is where you resin, you wipe your brush to the exact edge where the fleece meets the mold, dont get resin on the uncolored part of the fleece that is picture hanging over the egde (where the adhesive lies). You will only need to make sure that the resin only meets the egde of the mold/fleece so that the fleece hardens and stays attached to the mold. https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/hottaccord/fg12.jpg Hope this helps. ------------- Im a fiberglass whore!!
