well fleese material is alot thinker and becomes stronger when hard.

but the best is apolyester fleese material because when you apply polyester resin to the fleese material it heats it up and molds it and when it cools down and hardens it is a strong material. plus that stuff streches so eash its insaine

as far as jl and others using grill cloth its because they dont do the sanding after them selfs they get inturns etc to do it but the outcome is the peice is strong. if you go to alpins site it says they used speaker box carpet for one of there layers now imagine having to snd all the ripples.

as for sanding there is also a new material called spray poly or spray bondo have used it so much man complete time saver unbelievable.

mecp certification is not always needed. I have it and it has not helped me out at all. my experience out shines it.

the reason they use grill cloth,is that it produces a nice curve from point to point,it should still be backed up by glass mat, then i try to put some mdf in the mix, even 3/8" in between the layers make a HUGE difference! they dont have to be big, just make sure you surround them with fg.. and to get rid of the annoying resonances, coat the back of the contraption with mfm peel&seal(a perfectly reasonable alternative to dynamat..100$ for 100 ft#!!!!!! enough for a good, not incredible, job on an entire car!!
DO NOT FORGET TO USE SPRAY GLUE,3m 90,the snotty stuff, not the stuff that comes out like paint!
there are also 4$ alternatives to 3m,they are smaller cans, but they work fine!
as a tip for perfectionists out there, coat the inside of your speaker boxes as well! right on the wood, obviously b4 you line the box! this probably does more for the sound then bracing! although you must still brace, the coating doesn't prevent flex!

the reason grill cloth is used is for several reasons. the first is the weight to strength ratio is very high, meaning that it is very strong for being soooo thin. it is kinda like an ant lifting 100 times its body weight. 2nd is it can form to a lot more shapes than fleece.

Also large companies do have regular installers that do installs. the car that I just finished for sema, I did everything from the rough work, wiring, sanding, welding, putting on the body kit, and cleaning of the car after. I am not pissed by any means that ppl think that big companies have interns or minions that do all the b$#ch work. but most dont. i know for a fact that JL doesnt either. alpine might be another story i dont know.

Most of the large companies use polyester primer, but a lot of them and a lot of high end shops use molds. it takes a little more time for the initial piece, but the pieces afterwards go really quick and make a ton less work and more profit.
for the MTX,Xtant, coustic and streetwires cars, we do everything by hand and most of the stuff is done inhouse. there are a few pieces that are quicker and more cost effective to send out, or we dont have the ability to do it inhouse that gets outsourced.
