I have a pre fab box for some 15' compVR it is huge (6 ft3) and the subs hit perfectly in them. But I want to strip the carpet off of it and paint it. should I just sand on the MDF to make the seems smooth or should I put resin over the entire box and then sand or what? will any of this effect the performance of the sub?....

Oh yeah! is their any special paint I should use? (auto, interior or exterior house paint)

Well this is just my two cents I could be completely wrong but, I would take coat the box in resin and then sand it nice and smooth. Then I would lay some body filler over that to get you a nice smooth finish, sand, primer, wetsand, coat with, good paint! On paint it depends if you want to paint the color of your car I would go w/ auto paint.

realitycheck's got it. Did that to my box. Had some majore screws sticking up from where I didn't predrill enough and I put about 4 thick layers of resin on there. That thing's heavy now but you'll only need about one thick layer then bondo that and paint away. You can buy some really nice spray paint from an automotive store and some clear coat. Use this for a good finish. Or if you have a sprayer then go w/ that.

Depending on the finish of the box under the carpet, I would sand down the wood with 80 grit to get a rough surface and also drill small holes ( not throughthe box, just about 1/8 down ) sporatically over the box for the fiberglass to grab. Then fiberglass the box, sand, fill and then paint.

Were not talking about glassing it just putting resin on it, the resin should have no problem soaking right in.

yeah my mdf sucked some resin up. didn't presand or drill or anything.

How much more do you think it will weigh. It weighs 82 pounds empty with no subs it is made of 1 inch MDF.. I am afriad It will make my ass end sag..

Not a huge amout if you just put one good thick coat on. Mine was only heavy b/c I had put like 4 thick layers of resin to cover up the screws. Maybe another couple pounds.... estimating.
