hello. been reading for a while and wanted to finally ask a question. i just finished glassing my spare tire well and it came out great. i am in the process of doing the speaker mounting portion of the install. after i get the shape made with fleece and resined i intend to put many layers of fiberglass on the top of the fleece for strenth. oh yeah i will be running three 10w6v2. after all the glass cures i will be ready to start smoothing it out for paint. here is my question. do i first apply generious amount of duraglass and smooth it all out and then aplly the rage gold to get the final finish. or will the duraglass be plenty to get the desired smooth finishe for paint. also is duraglass the filler with the fiberglass hairs in the filler. if so can i use any brand of the stuff or is duraglass the way to go.

thanks

dennis

You don't really need generous amounts of either. Just enough to smooth the surface out. If you use too much then you increase the chances of it cracking.

I just got finished using both of the products you mentioned, they absolutely rock by the way.  The duraglas use it firsty of course sand it down, it doesnt have hairs in it I think it was more of a dust glass in the filler.   The rage gold I just put on tonight and sanded down that stuff is awesome sanding it just sands away with ease.  As for me the duraglas and rage gold is what I will use from now on.

Duraglass is the USC brand of fiberglass reinforced body filler. There are two types of it, short strand and long strand. Duraglass is short strand. I've used it and it works fine but my supplier carries Evercoat products so that's what I use. The Evercoat short strand is Everglass and the long strand is called Kitty Hair. You'll want to use the short strand type.

I have yet to use Duraglass, but I heard a lot of good thing about it and how strong it can be.  You can also use it to sharpen up edges on custom enclosures to make the install look a little cleaner.  posted_image
