Can you make a fiberglass enclosure using only cotton and fiberglass resin? Someone on another forum (here) is telling me that fiberglass enclosures can be made in different ways, and you don't HAVE to use fiberglass mat. I told him he didn't make a fiberglass enclosure if he didn't use mat (which he didn't), and that fiberglass resin is not fiberglass. A lot of people on that forum believe him and aren't listening to me, and it's getting into my head. Am I correct?

Well there are several different materials you can use to make a fiberglass enclousure. As far as cotton goes...I've never heard of that. I've used T-shirts..fleece..fiberglass mat..and "kitty hair."

if all he did was resin some fleece then he's going to be sorely dissapointed when he cranks the volume and his box flys apart from all the pressure, because just resin and fleece is not going to hold the pressure

I'm talking just strictly a blanket, perhaps another layer of fleece, and fiberglass resin. That's it, no fiberglass mat, kitty hair, nothing. Is that even a fiberglass enclosure? I thought fiberglass resin was just resin used FOR fiberglass, and that there is no fiberglass contained in it.

the resin most use is a polyester resin, or an epoxy resin, it's not strictly fiberglass resin you can use it on Carbon Fiber I think, you can use it to make pretty much any kind of material hard. But without a good material for it to adhere to then it's not strong

Yeah, I know it's polyester resin, I'm just making sure my thoughts are correct. I don't think I am a know-it-all, I just feel that I know enough about fiberglassing to know that what he made is not a fiberglass enclosure. I don't want other people on that forum thinking that they don't have to use fiberglass mat, and end up wasting their time and money.

A fiberglass enclosure must use fiberglass to be called that, , , , if he's useing cotton, , then he has a cotton enclosure......and that guy is a retard.   Cotton has no strength compared to fiberglass or carbon fiber.  He may as whell make a box out of silly string cheese.

Well, can you do it using only fleece and resin, yes. Thickness for thickness using fleece and mat/cloth will be stronger then just fleece and resin. Basicly 1/2" of fleece and resin will not be anywhere near as strong ans 1/2" inch of fleece, mat/cloth, and resin.

there are additives that can be added to the resin to make it strong. a lot of people including myself have and do use products called cab-o-sil or aresol mixed with the resin. it is used to fill the enclosure from the inside. it helps cut down on the time spent sanding the exterior of the project. there are a bunch of others that can be used too. look around at sites like fiberglast or other fiberglass specific sites and see what you can come up with.

if people doubt the strength, JL uses it to seal the 2 halves of their stealth boxes in production.

yeah...fiberglass is needed to make a fiberglass enclosureposted_image.........and did the guy even sand/finish the box??granted it was his first box........can't learn without making mistakes.....

but he states he didn't use any additive just straight resin and fleece is all he used, I myself have used thickeners in resin myself, works great if you use it, I don't think this guy did though, if he did then it should be strong but he never said he did

The guy said that he bought fiberglass mat, but decided NOT to use it, and that his enclosure is rock solid. He also said he's getting rave reviews from everyone about it, even other "seasoned" fiberglass guys from other forums. A "seasoned" fiberglasser would know that you have to use some form of fiberglass to create a fiberglass enclosure. I understand about the resin additives, but I don't think its appropriate for first timers, nor the average DIYer. Now this guy has other people on that forum thinking that he found a new way to fiberglass, just using fiberglass resin and blankets. This makes me sad.

I have made small pieces with fleece using only resin and no other additives.

I used a lot of resin and it completely drenched the fleece and actually was dripping through.

Afterwards its a very thick piece of cloth. If you think about it, it's possible with some weak hitting subs.

Since fabric is basically the same thing as fiberglass cloth right?
