Carpeting a FG enclosure

I had originally planned on painting my sub enclosure the same colour as my car, but now I'm having second thoughts. I was going to go for the 'piano finish' but I'm realizing how much work this will be, and if I ever damaged the paint job pulling my golf clubs out of the trunk I'd be ever so p*ssed off. And maybe a body colour inside an otherwise grey-carpeted trunk won't look that good. So carpeting this thing is now the plan.

My question is this: How difficult is it to carpet a FG box with some mad curves and corners? I'm assuming it can be done, but I could use any tips/tricks/advice that you good people can offer.

It can be done just make sure your carpet is stretchy and bends and molds easily.

i'm wodnering the same thing. i've come up with a few limiting factors that i'm taking into consideration when building my box.

1) how well the carpet will bend and stuff
2) how tight the curves are
3) will it be able to fit into the corners, or am i going to have to cut it a little

these are what i have come up with so far

Well i carpeted my FG enclosure with fleece that is the same color as my trunk's carpet. If you can use fleece once ... why not again.

Fleece is an excellent idea, the carpet in my civic is basically some kind of fleece polyester type material anyway. So theres you another alternative, chris_h

y dont you just use trunk lining? it is pretty stretchable, and will be an almost exact match. your local upholstry shop should carry it. use 3m fabric glue. the good stuff sprays out kind of stringy. spray both srufaces, let stand for a few minutes, then press together should last a lifetime. painting does take longer to prepare, but looks bad as hell!

How complex are the curves on the box? If there is alot of curves then find the stretchiest carpet out there, and it won't be trunk liner.

I've been sick lately, sorry I won't be on much.

Try to find a local top and textile wholesalers who carries all types of fabrics and carpets.  Some upholstery shops charge too much.  The wholealer has samples you can try out.  Ozite (unbacked automotive carpet) works great but after a while it starts to snag.  Tweed is also another great material to use, it came come in different weaves making it easier to work with.  And what ever you use make sure you use the right glue too much will soak thru you material and too little wont hold.  Always spray both pieces to be covered...

why build something unique just to finish it in something normal. put in the extra effort, itll be worth it

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll look for some really stretchable fabric. rknj01: now that the enclosure is just about finished, I think it would look funny to be painted. Also, I prefer a somewhat 'stock' look.
