So I am thinking of trying to make something like that out of fiberglass and MDF. One of those costs $110, but I figure I could make my own out of glass for around $50. What do you guys think? What could I use for the hinge?

I think this would be a good first project since it would be in the bed and I wouldn't have to worry about dripping resin, etc.

That fits in front or behind of the wheel well, by the way. It would be convenient because it would not take up cargo room, but it would give me a place to keep tow straps, etc.

Looks like a nice safe and easy starting place. It'll prove useful when completed and give learning experience, do it! :) I'm starting with a cupholder(I have cars, so my functionability without it being big is limited.)

That should be pretty cool making it yourself will prove very useful because you can make it anyway you want it to be. Your biggest problem is going to be making it hinge and also making it watertite. That will be really hard the only way I can think of to do this would be to make all areas around the hinge out of mdf so it will be nice and thick and then sandwich the mdf in fiberglass.

I would try a piano hinge you can get them at homedepot or lowesmount it on the inside lip of the box and the underside of the lid, if that doesnt suit your needs maybe try regular door hinges they are a little more beefy than piano hinges and might hold up a bit better. if you still not satisfied with that choice, i have seen some made out of a section of fire hose which is just cotton jacket over rubber hose cut a piece and attach it to the inside of the box and underside of the lid, it will definatly last a long time but might not afford the stability needed for the lid. which everway you go with have fun and take lots of pics. take your time and don't rush. it should turn out awsome! good luck.
