Ok..What I have is an Alpine IVA-D900....I want to turn my cup holder into a molded/Fitted remote control holder...

The idea I have so far is to

First: Line the Plastic Cup Holder and surrounding area with Aluminum Foil or Plastic Wrap....

Second: Get some spray foam and put some in the plastic lined cup holder

Third: as the foam stops rising around the top of the cup holder take another piece of plastic wrap and put it on top   of the rising foam...Then push my remote down into the plastic covered foam to get the perfect impression....

Fourth: Let the foam harden then pull out the mold...Cut the excess off the top so it sits flush to the surrounding area and shap it as needed...

Fifth: put a light coat of Fiber resin on the Molded piece and sand and shape it then paint it...

I want the piece removable so when I am not going to a contest or show I can remove it and use my cup holder.

If anyone has another Idea of how to get this done with an easier or better looking product plz post....

I dunno man... It sounds like it just might work. The type of foam you use is whats gonna make the difference. I wouldn't use "great stuff" or whatever it is.This may be better I just recently started plaing with this stuff and have yet to use it in a project but I think I might work for you want. It is kinda pricey for such a small job though.

Careful not to melt the foam with the resin.

I havent even thought about that...Damn...I dont know if that stuff will melt or not....I am probally going to use great stuff...I figure after a bit of sanding and a layer of resin or maybe I can just use a well mixed coat of Bondo or Rage Gold....

Hmmm I will have to test the Foam Resin melting point tommorow...

Thanx for shining light on that .....

You could foam, thin layer of bondo, then glass as much as you want and be safe.

or heck on second thought....What if i lined the thing with the plastic wrap...And then just filled the whole cavity with resin...

I have a lot of old resin that I have a little in each can type of thing....

I have never did that with resin but if I go heavy on the catalyst It SHOULD harden right...

HMMMM I think its playtime in the shop tommorow....

I will have all kinda messy crap drug out...But a case of Coors and some bored time and poof something is born...

Thanx for the info

that much resin in that small of space will get really hot, hopefully it won't warp the cup holder. if you polish it really good it should look like those museum peices with the ancient bugs in them, that would look really cool.

hehehe, no doc-t was just saying how if he poured all that resin into a cup and let it harden thats what it would look like, especially if he polished it.   You could catch a spider and put it in there and you could fiberglass you a walking cane like that doctor on there had.  With the old mosquito in it.   Thats exactly what I was thinking about when doc said that. Jurassic Park it all went down hill after the first one.
