Subject: resin on tape instead of fleece?

Does resin stick to tape?. I am making very complex shapes and curves and whatnot.. and i'd be able to accomplish it using tape. After getting a thin layer of resin on the tape.. I plan on adding layers of matt to build it up, and just leave the tape there.

What tape is out there that resin will adhere too?. Masking tape?. It doesn't necessarily need to soak into it, but more of a foundation that I can add layers of matt to and build it up.

I hope I explained it right lol. Basically, instead of fleece.. I want to use tape.

Resin will stick to almost anything. I can't picture what your tring to do, but if fleece won't work, you can give tape a shot. I've never tried it. But I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I'll try to explain. I have a PT Cruiser. Basically.. I have fiberglassed box in my hatch. There is about 4 inches on either side from the side of the box, to the plastic trim of my car. Looking at it.. I decided I want it to look like it's actually molded into the hatch area, without making an entirely new box. So for the hell of it.. with masking tape, double layered.. I taped one end to the box.. the other end to the plastic trim, and did it on both sides, and covered every gap on the left and right side. So after looking it.. I thought maybe without having to go out and buy fleece, hot glue one end to the box, and the other to the plasic, that I could just lightly brush 1 or 2 layers of resin on the tape. Then after it dries, start adding layers of mat to build it up.

My concern is if whatever tape I use will loosen up once the resin touches it, that's why i'm trying to figure out what tape I should use to do this.

I see what your talking about. I'm not sure what tape you should use. Maybe experiment a little outside the car? I would think that as long as no resin got on the sticky side of the tape it shouldn't lose its stickem. It may get warm or cause the tape to contract though, so I would try it outside the car first. Sorry I don't have an exact answer.

I tried doing exactly what you are talking about with one of my first boxes...ended up looking like *hit. It is virtually impossible to get the shape symetrical. And as nyguy4u suggested the sape will definately fall or sag, thus f*cking your shape even more.

I suggest you do it with fleece, or better yet, fill the gap with expanding foam (after taping it off properly) then you can cut and shape the foam. Glass over that, and finally get rid of the foam with some gasoline (preferably AFTER removing it from your car:) I think you will be MUCH happier with the results.

Anyways, good luck and post pics!

It will get warm and cause the adhesive to loose its stickyness. Also if you are using duct tape the resin will basically destroy it, I duct tape the bench if I am working outside the car, since it destroys the duct tape it won't stick to it and it comes up without destroying the bench.

i've done that on a jetta, and it came out pretty well, just make sure to cover and tape evrythig, foam is very messy.

good luck

Why not lay your tape then use spray glue to adhere the fleece to the tape...I dont know if it will work but sounds good in theory

Or maybe lay your tape then use layers of medical cloth tape...

I havent much experiance with Fiberglass so others may shoot my ideas down but heres my 2 cents...

If you just want to buy more fleece, use an old t-shirt or something.

if you try to get the foam to dissolve using gasoline, um, be VEEEEERRRRY careful....that stuff in Vietman called Napalm, yeah, when you soak styrene foam in gasoline you get napalm!

Well, its not really Napalm but almost as effective. Did I say effective?? I meant dangerous.

Well, I tried my tape theory anyways.. just wanted to make sure if it would work or not.

Everyone said it wouldn't work.. but guess what?.. it did!. I used to work at a production company, and I still have black gaffers tape from them. It's the same size as ducttape, and it's the same material like medical tape. I used that to make my current box blend with my oem plastic panels. Drilled holes into the plastic every 4 inches so the resin could seep into them to make a better bond to the plastic. Then I brushed a light coat of resin on the tape, waited 24 hrs hrs, and brushed on a 2nd coat.. and it's hard as a rock. Tomorrow i'll be laying 2 or 3 layers of matt over that, bondo.. and i'm set.

So, if you have black gaffers tape.. you can indeed resin it. The tape doesn't lose grip to whatever it's taped to, and it didn't sag.

Ya learn somethin new every day :)

I'm glad you actually tried it. I had a feeling the only thing that would keep it from working would be whatever tape you used. Now I know a new trick if I ever need it.

It's a tape that production/tv people use to tape down wires, etc. It's a black cloth. I mixed my resin hot, because of the weather here, and when it touched the tape.. it didn't sag or lost tackyness. Doesn't leave residue either.

Great stuff. Type in gaffers tape in google and i'm sure you can find it. If you can't I can find out where to get it.

I know what kind of tape you're talking about now.  I dont remember where I've seen it, but I know what you're talking about.   Its a cloth and its not shiny like the back of duct tape, its got like a mat finish to it. I think my grandfather has some at his house or something.

Yep, that's it!
